take this sword, its brightness stands for faith. in lieu of a heart, the oath hammers almost unconsciously against her chest. its point for hope. its guard for charity. again and again with metronomic steadiness, her mouth begins to silently form the words as she surrendered her body to its training.
the forest floor swallows their steps; the pound of their feet into the dirt a muffled thrum. too asynchronous to be identical—clementine’s body moved of its own certain accord, in spite of the fear nestled in the pit of her chest, in smooth, clean, strides, while grace’s slowly gave to exhaustion. she holds her in her periphery, a jagged blur of trembling, animal, fear. feels, before she sees, her stumble over a root snatching upward at just the wrong angle. clementine turns to watch her, a hand instinctively reaching, as one moment of uncertainty is traded for another: grace begin to slow. for fear or something entirely other, she can’t tell, but she grabs her all the same. no, she thinks, not yet. her fingers tightly close around the other woman’s bicep, pulling her along with hissed encouragement.
“we can’t stop yet,” she says, or pants, swiping at errant curls pasted to her forehead with sweat. half-dragging grace along, she dares another glance past their shoulders, watching for some inkling of movement—a blur or shadow—and finds nothing. christ.
clementine releases her after a few more yards, her eyes heavenward as she left her head fall back, her palms flat against the small of her back. waiting for her breath to slow.
the air felt almost too heavy to breathe. heat and moisture coalescing against the back of her neck like the breath of something large and unknowable. an unnamed thing waiting with its jaws agape.
“whatever it was,” she says, her breath as hard as she’d allow it, “it can’t be far behind us.” and she needed to find it. to cage it for the order to study. or kill it with her own hands.
“come on,” clementine says with a punctuative exhale and starts walking again.
“let's get back the truck and regroup from there.” she’d prefer to keep grace out of it altogether, but this was almost a palatable compromise. she could send grace on her way and work backward.
@elpiskey, cont.
I will at some point write something better on them, but I really loved the relationship between clementine and johann as these near-perfect opposites on the spectrum of human empathy/humanity as a performance

"There will come a ruler Whose brow is laid in thorn Smeared with oil like David's boy" Duty. Strength. Resignation. You were told to do things and you did them. The world is something that was put into your hands and that you must deal with—so you will. You have a rigid back and steady hands, either metaphorically or physically. Is it nature or nurture ? You don't know. You are tired of being steady. You dream of feeling alive. Not that you aren't, but, sometimes, it's hard to remember that there is a heart between your ribs. Your love is where you breathe. Come on, breathe. In. Out. It starts now.

he has been around long enough to see how often people use mysticism, stories, in place of actual answers, anything tangible he could latch onto. he’s watched it happen in real time, on bases with sensors and cameras; where every movement was supposed to be logged and that still didn’t settle, answer anything. in afghanistan, the monitors showed motion that should have resolved into animals or heat signatures and then, did not.
there had been upright shapes appearing on FLIR feeds and ones that vanished when someone checked the tower or dropped nods over the hescos. there was nothing on the ground and absolute no trace where there should have been one. should have been something—the wind would move through the wire at night and people claimed they heard distant voices, and nobody wrote it down because there was no box for it to go into. some of the interpreters refused certain routes after dark, avoided areas they walked through easily during the day, talked about jinn and old battles. he was raised spiritually, but subscribed to no faith now. they weren’t meant to be there in the first place, that whatever had settled into that ground long before did not care for their presence.
he has seen the photos. the condition of the bodies would not fit neatly into any classification he understood. the damage did not look like what animals leave behind after a hunt, a kill. nothing that resembled the human violence he knows intimately well, something other. “ i ain't disagreeing, ” he says. he means it, meets her eyes inbetween words. dr. chasseur, with all her faults, is still brilliant—unlike most marines. “ i’m just not giving the monster theories much credence, ” the whispers, the rumors that are spilling beyond the edges of this backwater, rust belt town. the reason he’s here now.
there was an unseen world that lived in the margins of their own and humans weren’t at its apex. predators that hid beneath human faces and walked in the skins of wolves. this was not theory, this was observable fact. and even so, if she hadn’t seen with her own two eyes a man that could not be a man any longer, her doubts would win too. it’s not quite the outstretched hand she’d have liked—chassuer had no misconceptions about her place here, nor the caveat of the badge in her pocket—but it’s not a hard no either. “it doesn’t make much of a difference to me,” she flicks him a smile. “so long as I can do my job.” agnosticism she could work with; it was those that shut their eyes completely, unwilling even to observe the world around them, that she couldn’t stand.
“but, since we’re trading theories,” chasseur leans against the truckside, her comfortably crossing. the buck moon had illuminated the sky not three days ago, and rang in with it a new girl—or, more aptly, pieces of one. like the others, she’d been local. and, like the others, all signs pointed to a particularly cruel method of consumption. but, apart from geographical proximity, the girls shared nothing in common. she had a good idea of what they were searching for, but pieces still evaded her. why them? “what do you make of it?”

caution enters a room before you do — you arrive quietly, like a breath taken before speaking. you choose where to stand. where to sit. who to look at. your presence isn’t loud but it’s deliberate, weighted with attention. people often miss you at first. that’s fine. you’re not here to be consumed immediately. you are gathering information, reading undercurrents, noticing what isn’t being said. when you do engage, it’s precise. thoughtful. real. and by then, you’ve already seen everything.
colors: slate, mist grey, muted sage scene: sitting near a window, watching reflections more than faces, storing details you’ll remember later.
stolen (steal it!)
for every way he is her antithesis, this distrust is one they share. her faith (her sanity) hinged entirely on the solid ground of scientific observation: what could be perceived, what could be reproduced, could too be understood when the time was right.
"I believe in things I see." @falsedk1ng says and chasseur nods her agreement.
when all else was uncertain, what was real beneath their feet was what mattered (what she clung to).
"me too," she says. "and I've seen the pictures—I assume you have too." they could debate faith all day, but these things couldn't be denied. the bodies, the circumstances in which they were found, at the very least, demanded further investigation. "surely you don't disagree that these are usual circumstances."
"I just didn't want to confront it. that's why I made a joke of it." @revnants says in the manner of prey at the chase's end. she was giving up. off peels another layer, pared back to reveal the other woman's horror beneath.
it's moments like these, when conversation starts too feel too much like breathing the same stale air—chafing at wounds she wouldn't permit to close—that clementine is grateful she had not called for social work. this wasn't her problem to shoulder. but she could be a warm body in the interim. "I believe you were trying to do the right thing," she says.
