Shake Your Swamp Thang
āHey! No fair. No Spider-Men for you!ā Maddox pouted at the children, who laughed and ran away. He looked to Darius and laughed,Ā āDamn young people and their spoilers. I wanted it to be surprise.āĀ
āTake me to the river and show me my face anyway.ā he said, nudging him, picking up his half-drunk bottle of beer and hoping theyād bypass a cooler on the way.
āWhipper snappers. Thatās what me pops always called me and other kids when I was smaller.ā Darius laughed when Maddox finally caught up.Ā āHe also said children always repeat word for word what you shouldnāt have said so make sure to not say anything in ear shot of one. I must have gotten in him into the dog house a time or two when I was younger with me Ma.āĀ
He kept hopping over stone and brush trying to make it to the river so Maddox could see his half painted skelo-face. Darius touched his own to see if it was dry and there was only a little red pain on his fingers from his Spiderman mask paint. He bent down at the river to his knees and looked over the edge.Ā āKind of sloppy, Maddox. I hope youāre high.ā He laughed.Ā
Shake Your Swamp Thang
Maddox laughed at the response he got, and crushed the cigarillo butt underfoot before sitting down on the stump. He patiently waited for his face to get painted, someone handed him a beer and he sipped at it out of the corner of his mouth, once he realised only have of his face was getting painted.
When it came to his turn to do the painting, he had no idea what he was going to do. Maddox didnāt have any artistic talent in the slightest. He only really had a limited palette to work with anyway, and when he saw the pots of red, white and black, he had a stupid idea and snickered to himself with glee as he painted Dariusā face red. When he was done, he sat back on his haunches and grinned.Ā āDone!ā he said, taking Dariusā hand, eager to see his face and Dariusā reaction at his Spider-Man face paint.
Darius watched as he saw the paints come to him. They were cool from the evening coming in but warm once Maddox started to paint it around and smear it in. He could see Maddox snickering too and wondered what in the heck he was doing that was so funny.Ā
Some of the local kids at the party would tell Darius before he ever would make it to the river to find out for himself. Children were pointing, laughing, and jumping. The next thing Maddox would have was a whole parade of children wanting their faces painted like Spiderman too.Ā
āMake me Spiderman, Mister. Please Mister!?ā He had a bouncing train of kids encircling him and Darius laughed and laughed. He was going to figure out how to spin a web before the nightās end if it was the last thing heād do.Ā

āAye. A carnie freak since I was 18, a showman since the crib though from what I understand.ā Caddy stated, flashing a smile.Ā āI always found the gambler type to be more fun anyway, whatās the worst that can happen from a gentlemanās bet?ā The freak reasoned, shrugging his shoulders before milling over Dariusā question.
āEh, why the hell not. Fair warning, your hands arenāt deceiving you, my mouth really is cut ear to ear like a snarky comic book villain. One comment about fighting the batman though and Iām afraid the knives will be withheld until no one is looking. and then you can at least tell everyone on the other side that you got one good joke out before you met your maker.ā He chuckled, sitting his glass down and tucking his hands into his pockets.Ā āLuck is on your side though, I always travel with my equipment on my person, donāt even have to trust a drunk freak to lead the way back to a knife collection.ā
āOnly losing house, home, money, reputation, and life, but whereās the fun without the risk, eh?ā Darius shook his head in a jovial laugh.
āEven better. I just hope itās not on your face. Scars I can handle. Blades cutting my hands is like gouging at my eyes.ā He smiled as he slowly lifted his hands and let his fingers move around to find the top of Caddockās head. From there he moved them slowly down over the hill of his brows and the slope of his nose. He thumbed two slides down each side over the rounds of his cheeks. Scars were no joke. He felt those too. He touched softer there worried if they were tender. But, they felt healed to him. Fingers smoothed over lips and under his chin. He could feel the bristle of hair growth on a late night. He cupped his face on both sides from under his jaw.Ā āNice to meet you Caddock.ā He did smirk a little and reached down for his ankle and pulled up his jeans.Ā āI carry some on me too.ā There was a blade holstered right there and concealed by denim. His dogs had them hidden in their harnesses. But, he didnāt usually point that out to people for the safety of his dogs.Ā
Just Beneath the Trees II Open
`What? Ā Do you have a problem with ghosts? Ā Fine Iāll say goth next time.` She thought to herself all hmph like. Ā She was a girl- they were terribly hard toĀ
understand anyway. Ā Feeling her upper lip curl out and her eyes get all sad for a split moment. Ā The Doctor. Ā Her dream crushed. Ā Crushes on fictional people sucked. Ā āWell a girl can dream,ā she said as she sighed like oh well.Ā
Ā It wasnāt the end of the world. Ā He just got her super hyped up for a moment thatās all. Ā While she smiled sweetlyĀ āthere both lovely names,ā she said happily cheerfulĀ āis Heaven a girl and Loco a boy?ā Ā She questioned curiously. Ā Heaven can pant in her face all Heaven wants as she loved animals. Ā As she still petted her down happily. Ā Her attention all over Heaven than Darius trying to get the final details as she had no idea about his visual problems. Ā Although she was on lower ground and noticed the dribble of blood- as she noticed other little things. Ā Like the painted bottles the way things were staged she was questioning if he was a witch but some of these things didnāt feel familiar to her. Ā Feeling her head finally look up. Ā She paused as he probably was the first Bokor sheās ever met as she couldnāt help but smile. Ā āCool.ā Ā She said as she nodded her head like that was really cool. Ā āQuick before I have to keep myself hush-hush. Ā Whatās your name? Ā They call me Rowan.ā Ā She piped in before she could watch because she wasnāt sure she caught his name. Ā What was up with people not handing down names these days. Ā `Oh,` she thought all gigglish- not only was this her first voodoo ritual up close she thought he was implying she was pretty when he told her she could be the goddess if only this was her body she certainly would all over that. Ā Feeling this smile capture her face.Ā āOk,ā she nodded her head receiving the idea,Ā āonly were do you want me to sit exactly?ā Ā She questioned confused.
āYes, Heaven is a girl, Loco, a boy, and not usually a gentleman so watch out for where he sticks his nose.āĀ
He nodded his head at her giving her name. However, he wouldnāt have known if she was pretty to save his life. She was merely a big blur to him. He could make out the shape of her enough to know there was a human before him, but that as far as it went.Ā āNice to meet you Rowan. Iām Darius for now. You may hear me call myself by other names. Donāt be afraid.ā He didnāt want to scare her. He didnāt want her to run either. But, he wouldnāt say it wasnāt dangerous. It would depend on what mood the loa were in. Either way Darius would be paying his respects.Ā
āSit here in the center.ā He patted the grass near his bucket of blood driplets. He kneeled back down and felt around till he found a felt bag and dumped the contents before him in the grass. There were stones of many different colors and textures. He picked up each one and fisted it in his palm and held it to his face. He was trying to feel for the vibration each gave off. It was easier for him to know the difference in the stones through their energy than looking. When he found the moonstone he waited for Rowan to kneel before him too so he could place it in her lap like he said he would do.Ā
Dark DealingsĀ ā§ Open
āFor some the drink is the only stagnation they can find. Those of us who are pursued relentlessly by our own thoughts have found a convenient off button through the liver.ā
āCaddock Glasgow.ā he introduced, pausing to light up a cigarette and take a lengthy drag, laughing softly before tilting his head to the side when he spoke again.Ā āAnd how do you know Iām not one or the other?ā he questioned.Ā āI mean youāre in luck because Iām both a freak andā¦mid to low ranges of dangerous depending on your trust of a drunk knife throwerās aim. If youāre one of the types to beg to see a trick then I may be somewhere in axe murder levels of dangerous at this point in the evening, right pissed I am, aimās all off and thereās two of ya.ā
A chuckle escaped the bokor thinking he really needed to get in tune with his liver.Ā āMaybe thatās the fun, yeah? Call me a gambler.ā What was the worst that usually happened? If someone assaulted him heād call the loa and eat them for dinner? Heād trust in the loa to protect his vessel somehow.Ā
āAh, a performer, eh? Iām afraid I donāt get many chances to enjoy things like that.ā Only when the loa mounted him fully were his eyes of proper use. Sadly, he didnāt always remember those times. Blackouts were a big issue in his life.Ā āI wonāt be begging to see anything, at least not with my eyes.ā He lifted his hands off his guide dogsā handles and wondered,Ā āWould you mind if I met you properly?ā He wiggled his fingers with a grin.Ā āIād like to see your knives too. I have a collection for gutting and skinning. I consider me-self a connoisseur. Ā May I touch your face, Caddock Glasgow, possible axe murderer? At least then if I die, Iāll know the face of my killer. Iāll bitch about ya on the other side.ā
Dark DealingsĀ ā§ Open
Whiskey clung to Caddockās breath the same way the bitterness clung to every word he spoke, he was a mean drunk- a mean most everything, if one was honest, but 15 glasses of coldcock in his system and whatever else heād managed to score off the young lady he had been chatting up earlier in the evening certainly werenāt helping his demeanor. But some part of him knew that being outwardly hateful to strangers was the fastest way to get him in trouble, so even drunk and more than a little testy, he took a deep breath, shook his head, and apologized.
āEh, crowded bar, it happens.ā He admitted, his own accent clearly a good bit Scottish, learned from immigrant grandparents and carried well into his adult life.Ā āAnd I suppose I am a mean one, hardly any time to provide anyone any kind of pleasantries in this day and age, gotta make your case and make it quick.ā
Perhaps his outlook was skewed, the lifestyle he had followed since his late teens had been one connected to criminal activity, drug dealers and police officers alike were easier to deal with without things such as pleasantries and manners in the way.Ā āIām also a good bit too drunk to pick any fights with anyone this eveninā. Not out for trouble just out for a drink or⦠sixteen.ā
āOh lucky day. Iāll take kindness in the form liquid laziness as well Iāll take bravery in liquid courage. In the end it gets the job done.āĀ
āIām Darius Baron and I hate crowded spaces for this ver'a reason. Iām going to go finish gettin' wasted in an environment I might not trip over into an axe murderer or worse, one of those Hollywood types from the Cortez. Theyāre more the types I trip on purpose.ā
This seems like it could be a day in the life of Darius and a bokor and a drug dealer if names and a few minor details were changed. The fox is one of his dogs.Ā
Task 5
Darius with his skateboard, his fishing pole, his sacrificial chicken, his music, and his joint. Heād probably hang out with the hippies they had to run out of town.Ā
Talismans, mojo hands and charms to create or eliminate hexes are the frequent subject of African American folk tales and blues songs.Ā Authors Zora Neale Hurston and Toni Morrison have used folk magic in their work as have countless blues singers. Muddy Waters, in his 1954 recording of āHoochie Coochie Man,ā sang: āIāve got a black cat bone/ I got a mojo too/ I got the John the Conquerer root/ Iām gonna mess with you/ Make all you pretty girls/ take me by my hand/ Then the world gonna know/ Iām the Hoochie Coochie Man.ā Ā© 1995 Bill Steber

Shake Your Swamp Thang
āIām fucked up, Iāll do anything to make a fool of myself, really.ā Maddox shrugged,Ā āI canāt skate. Never had the ankles for it. I had a BMX though. Broke my arm trying to do sweet jumps.ā he said, flicking the ash that had accumulated on his cigar. His eyes lit up at the idea of being painted. That sounded like a fucking riot.Ā āYou sure Iām black enough to be painted up? But sure man, that sounds fun.ā
āBlack enough? Paint will cover any skin, so will mud, you wanker. Itāll cover pale ass too. I can shove it up the hole too if youāre into that.ā Darius rolled eyes that were seeing more clearly than heād ever know. He sat Maddox down on a tree stump to paint his face like the dead. He topped his weed dealerās hat back on his head with a pop when he was done. Throughout the process Darius smoked more weed and jammed his head up and down to the music vibrating the branches in the trees.Ā
A celebration of life always meant respect for the dead. Mortality a flip of a coin and part of each other. Thatās why Darius decided to paint the other with a 2-sided paint job to symbolize this life and the life thereafter.Ā
āYour turn Maddox. Paint me up. I donāt have mirror. We can go down to the river and see our reflections in the water after.āĀ
