I really enjoyed making this piece — it was genuinely so fun to work on!

This character is yet another incredibly cool one, and honestly, I’m not surprised when it comes from artists who put so much personality into their creations. There’s just something about certain OCs that makes you want to draw them immediately.

I feel like my art is improving, and I think my patience is too, because this piece definitely tested it! But in the end, it’s all about giving yourself the time to create something you’re happy with.

Anyway, I’m going off track again...

This character was just too cool, and with Art Fight almost coming to an end, I had to make something for them. I hope you enjoy it!

What is your take on using references for drawings? If you do use them, what are some good resources to check out?

References are awesome and I love them so much. I honestly find this ask a little confusing because like... What do you mean take? Are there people who believe the only pure art is that which comes entirely from the images in your head? That's scary.

Anyway, here are my favorite reference resources:

Animal Photo Art Reference Search - One of my favorite tools. This is a really handy way to easily get reference photos of animals at very specific angles.

Pose Search - Created by the same developer as the animal ref search. This one allows you to search for photos of specific human anatomy in different poses, using a handy little skeleton doll.

Internet Archive's "Painting from Photographs" Category (+ other related categories) - Full of some really great reference books. I especially love using books because they're curated by another human and they often come with some helpful discussions to guide you.

STL Finder - Technically built for 3D printing, but I find it really helpful for finding high-quality 3D models to reference. Any time I'm drawing a difficult object (like a long gun or some armor helms), I find it helpful to just download one of these and pull it up in Blender to help me get some references at the exact angle I'm looking for.

Unsplash - My favorite free stock photo website. Unlike search engines like Google Images, every photo on this site has been uploaded by its photographer, so you can easily link back to them to credit them for any studies of their work. I also use this site a lot for creating textures for my overlays & backgrounds.

How to actually* tell if an image is AI-generated.

(*For now, anyway.)

Generative AI has gotten really good at its job. You've probably been tricked by it, whether you know it or not. As it gets increasingly difficult to spot, I just want to put out a little guide on how I personally check if something is real. This is not going to be 100% fool-proof, and things may change as this technology continues to evolve and shift!

I'm mostly just tired of seeing AI-generated images getting shared by my mutuals while real artists get accused of using AI for clearly human-made art, lol.

Check 1: The Obvious Stuff

If an image looks unlikely, comes from an obscure source, and has details that don't match up with reality, this should be your sign to be suspicious. Unless you see something that is 100% without-a-doubt synthetic, take this as your sign to get curious, not accusatory.

As an example, let's take this image, which currently is being shared about Tumblr on a wildly popular post:

At first glance, this looks pretty convincing. This pool could very much be a real place. But something about that alligator looks a little weird, doesn't it? An adult alligator typically weighs over 500lbs (227kg), so it wouldn't make sense for it to be riding a pool float without making any sort of indentation.

At this point, let's take that suspicion a step further and do something very simple...

Check 2: Reverse Image Search

The classic move. This should be the first thing you do any time you see anything not-quite-right on the internet. TinEye is pretty good, but I've been getting better results with Google Lens tbh. My fellow Firefox users can get the Search by Image extension to access a bunch of different image search tools at once, like so:

Let's use Google Lens for the sake of this example. With funny animal pictures, art, and aesthetic posts, you're often going to see a bunch of useless repost results on sites like Instagram and Facebook. If you're lucky, you'll also find some Reddit posts, particulary on subreddits like r/isthisAI or r/isitAI, both of which are VERY helpful.

We can follow those Reddit links, aaaaand...

This image has a Synth ID! So it's definitely AI. I agree with what this commenter said; it's likely a real backyard that someone has inpainted a funny-alligator-on-an-alligator-float into. This is a very common way to make a super convincing image that can easily go viral.

These two subreddits are excellent places for getting potentially AI-generated content reviewed by others. It's also a really good place to train your own eyes, as you can try to make content judgement on your own before checking the comments to see if you were right!

Check 3: Google Synth ID & C2PA Content Credentials

You know that thing I just mentioned? The Synth ID? It's a really good way to immediately know that an image has been generated by AI.

Before I explain what it is, let me make this very clear: Synth ID cannot provide false positives, but it can provide false negatives. If an image has been compressed or was created with a generator that does not implement a Synth ID, it will not return one, even if that image is 100% AI-generated.

Synth ID is a Google DeepMind technology that basically impliments a watermark into anything generated with Google's AI tools (which have become very popular lately, as they're some of the most realistic models available). You will need to use Google Gemini to confirm if a Synth ID is present. If you're making the personal choice to not use any form of AI technology, you will not be able to check for a Synth ID on your own. In that case, I strongly recommend posting on the aforementioned subreddits for help.

Content Credentials are less reliable, in my opinion, but still worth mentioning. They come as metadata attached to different forms of synthetic content. You're typically only going to find these intact on content that creators are explicitly telling you is AI-generated, so I don't find them very useful for things that aren't immediately obvious.

When all else fails, ask someone who knows more than you. That's a good idea for, like, anything. I love bugging other people to get a second opinion. You don't need to be paranoid about a robot boogeyman, but it's good to use common sense to avoid feeding into the rise of viral soulless synthetic content. 👍

Also a really nice way is to zoom in on the image. AI images can sometimes look a bit painted when you zoom in, instead of having the tiny grain and texture that real camera photos usually have.

Look for repeating tiny details. Check things like grass, hair, fur, fabric, or leaves. AI sometimes accidentally repeats small patterns over and over. They seem random at first, but if you look closely, you'll notice parts that look strangely alike.

So I managed to write the lore of Marivel and Percival

Britain, 1921.

The rain hides more than footprints.

Detective Percival is a man of few words. Years spent solving crimes have taught him that silence is often more powerful than conversation. He observes before he speaks, keeps his thoughts locked behind a calm expression, and carries himself with the quiet confidence expected of one of Britain's finest detectives. To those around him, he is composed, disciplined, and impossible to read.

Assigned to his newest investigation is Marivel, a young deputy from the sheriff's department. Unlike Percival, Marivel speaks his mind. He eagerly offers theories, asks questions, and approaches every case with an optimism that only someone new to the profession can possess. His determination and tireless work ethic earned him his position, but experience is something no amount of enthusiasm can replace.

The two are brought together by a single case.

A mugger was found stabbed to death in a rain-soaked alley late one evening. The storm washed away nearly every trace of evidence, leaving behind only uncertainty. With so little to work from, Percival and Marivel begin searching for a killer hidden somewhere within the city.

Their partnership begins professionally, but over time grows into something far more complicated.

Marivel gradually falls in love with Percival. Wanting nothing more than to be worthy of the detective's affection, he slowly reshapes himself around the man he admires. He sacrifices pieces of himself in the hope that one day Percival might love him just as deeply. His unwavering devotion eventually earns him the title "The Fool's Trust"—a reflection of a man willing to surrender everything for someone who may never be able to give the same in return.

Percival's feelings are just as real.

He loves Marivel, but refuses to let himself embrace that love. Their relationship exists only behind closed doors; outside, they are nothing more than colleagues. It is not society's judgment that keeps Percival distant, nor the fact that their love must remain hidden.

It is guilt.

On the night the mugger died, the mugger attempted to rob Percival. Acting in self-defense, Percival fought back. The struggle ended with the mugger's death.

No one knows the truth.

No one except Percival.

Every day he leads the investigation with quiet precision, fully aware that the person he is searching for is himself. Each clue, each witness, and each report forces him to relive the same night over and over again. His silence is no longer simply the habit of a detective—it is the burden of a man carrying a secret that could destroy everything he has built.

As Marivel searches tirelessly for justice, he unknowingly places his complete trust in the very man whose greatest crime is not the killing itself, but believing he no longer deserves to be loved.

Percival is investigating a case whose ending he has known from the very beginning.

Can we please stop pretending dainty little coffee cups are superior.

I don't want a mug that looks like it belongs in a Victorian dollhouse. I want a mug that could survive being dropped down a flight of stairs and come back asking if I'm okay.

Give me those thick ceramic mugs. The ones with walls so chunky your coffee stays warm for an extra hour. The ones that weigh approximately as much as a newborn. The kind where wrapping both hands around it feels like you've just signed a peace treaty with the universe.

Thin mugs? No. I don't trust them. Every sip feels like I'm one accidental elbow away from drinking shattered porcelain.

A GOOD mug should have:

- A handle you can actually fit your fingers through.

- Enough weight that you could use it as a home defense weapon if necessary.

- Thick rims that somehow make coffee taste 14% cozier.

- The ability to hold an irresponsible amount of caffeine.

And don't even get me started on oversized diner mugs.

Those absolute tanks.

They've seen things. They've been through seventeen years of coffee refills, questionable life decisions, and someone's uncle telling the same driving a 2010 Honda story every morning, and they're STILL standing.

There is something deeply comforting about a mug that says, "Yeah. Sit down. You're gonna be here a while."

I don't just want coffee.

I want it delivered in a ceramic brick with a handle.

Hi , my character is actually a kinsona of another borzoi priest from a video game . ( He's usually drawn as a human , but the creator likes to draw him as a borzoi with wings on his neck . . So I did that too lol it felt fitting for a kinsona )

But since the breed is similar , and the occupation is the same , I suppose it's easy to get it confused .

My character for reference : ( this is a little outdated 🥲 ; but I took my inspiration from this character very heavily . Even took the cross on the priest collar lmfao — he used to have the scarf as well but I decided against it for his redesign . . )

Even the outfit is incredibly similar 👁️‍🗨️👁️‍🗨️💧

I do understand the confusion though . . Especially when translated into a cartoon dog style that doesn't have hair ( because I hate drawing hair — I think it looks weird on anthro ) 💔

I'm tired of people getting my characters confused with that creator though , so I thought I'd post my inspiration .
