Having Harlem the red-eared slider as my only animal companion is very special. She has been with me for 18 years and probably be for the rest of my life. As a cold-blooded species, she's so different than dogs and cats. Quiet and patient, she's not easily excitable or reactive to disturbances. I find her to be a very therapeutic companion, and I am discovering the subtleties of her effects on me, especially with absence of dogs. She enjoys being in physical contact with my body, and I look forward to sharing my body heat with her. It's a weird exchange in some ways, but she grounds me and we can meditate daily in stillness for long periods of time. I was never feeling this peaceful with my canines friends. I'm learning that appreciating something that was always there is easier when other distractions are gone.
