Hello. So, this is not my typical post, but I thought I should address it because of my history with this person, and the fandom.
I have been debating back and forth for two weeks if I should share my thoughts and my OWN opinions and feelings about this whole situation between Joseph Quinn and Doja Cat. This will be long, so bear with me. I used to be VERY active in the Stranger Things fandom, mainly on Twitter, and although i’m no longer an active person in that fandom, and have changed my blog and twitter I still love and adore Eddie Munson, and always will. Once I decided to take a step back from that fandom, I still stayed in the Joseph Quinn fandom because I still adored, loved, and supported him and his work. I started supporting Joseph when I was 18, and i’m now about to be 21 on Sunday. Almost 4 years. This sickening feeling in the pit of my stomach every time they are brought up has about done me in.
I have never been a fan of Doja Cat, and I never will. And that is not because of her skin color, or because she is a woman. It is because she is an absolutely disgusting human. I will NOT support someone who is a KNOWN Neo-Nazi supporter, a bigot, rape apologist, and someone who taunts and mocks SA victims. (also someone who has stated multiple times that she doesn’t care about her fans.) Now, you can say whatever you want, but I do not give a flying fuck. You are who you choose to surround yourself with. PERIOD. I have witnessed this firsthand on multiple occasions. I don’t want the excuse that “oh, well, Jospeh hates social media and has no idea what she’s said/done.” It takes less than 5 minutes to google her and see what kind of person she is and what she supports. Going forward, I will be taking a step back from Joseph and the fandom. I will not support someone who has clearly made it obvious that he tolerates that behavior by choosing to “be with her” and continuing to do so. THIS IS MY CHOICE. I have every right to do this, and you can not tell me otherwise. I’m so sick and fucking tired of seeing people defend him for this, and seeing people tell others that are choosing to not support him anymore and hold him accountable that they are in a parasocial relationship with him, and that not supporting him anymore because he is dating Doja is childish, sad, and not that big of a deal, and they need to “touch grass”. This is a big deal.
Let me make this VERY CLEAR. We are NOT not supporting him or “hating on” Doja because they are “dating”. We are leaving this fandom or taking a step back, and holding him accountable for his actions because he is choosing to have relations (whether that be a platonic one or romantic one, I could honestly give a fuck) with a woman who is a Neo-Nazi supporter, a bigot, a rape apologist, and someone who taunts SA victims. And we are not “hating on Doja” because of her skin color or because she is a woman, and dating “our fav”. We are just speaking facts. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to open their fucking eyes and do their own research. We are allowed to be disappointed in Joseph because of the current choices he’s made. Who wants their idol to associate themselves with or let alone date someone so problematic?
Us as fans and supporters of celebrities and influencers, we have no say in who our idols or who any celebrity dates. Some of us might adore their relationship, others not so much. Some might ship the couple, others might not. And clearly we don’t know them personally, and we most likely never will. And trust me, we know we were never gonna have a chance with Joseph. We know we weren’t gonna meet him randomly on the street or at a convention and something romantic was going to come of it. Sure, we would like to think it would, but that’s just not how it works.
Now, SOME people in the fandom definitely have a parasocial relationship with him, but not all of us. I will not make excuses for him because he is someone I supported, and you shouldn’t either. He is a 30 year old man, and he doesn’t need a bunch of people who are chronically online to defend him. We need to stop putting celebrities on pedestals. They aren’t going to do things that we like all the time, and that’s okay. they are going to make their own choices without caring who it effects, or what it looks like on their part, sadly.
One of the main reasons it’s so disappointing is that Joseph in the past, more specifically in 2022, from what we saw, was very shy and introverted, and very vocal about wanting to keep his personal life private. He wasn’t like the normal money hungry people in Hollywood. He was more “normal” and that was very appealing and refreshing to see because it’s so rare. Now seeing this all come to light, it really makes you question his morals, and if he ever was that good, sweet, genuine, caring, guy he led us to believe he was.
And that makes you QUESTION who he really is and if he ever really was that guy to begin with because of his recent choices. I refuse to excuse this behavior because of who he is and brush it under the rug. The sad truth of this is that an idol of ours who we admired NOW proudly associates himself with a bigot, and rape apologist.
Joseph will learn the very hard way the current mistakes he has made, even if that means damaging his career, or even ruining it, and that’s all on him, no one else. Now I don’t wish that his career flops, but continuing down this now problematic hole he has gotten himself into, it could very well happen. I would also like to say that i’m also sick and tired of people telling others that have been personally affected by this that their feelings aren’t valid for feeling the way they do about this.
For any POC/black fans, or victims of SA or abuse who feel deeply affected by this, you’re feelings are very valid. If you need to take a break, leave the fandom, block people, etc. Do it. Your well being and mental health matters more than anything. Please don’t let a celebrity’s actions and choices get the better of you. I know it may be hard in the beginning, but sometimes letting things and people go is for the better. Take care of yourself and YOUR well being. Do what you need to do to make yourself happy, and if supporting him doesn’t make you happy anymore, then don’t do it.
Words can’t describe how sad and disappointed this makes me. I won’t let his actions define my opinions about Eddie, or any of his other characters as him and his characters are completely different. This is where separating the actor and character will now come into play.
