Ok hot take but I think Dante's character is funnier & more interesting if we accept that he's a little bit of a dick sometimes, a tiny sprinkle of asshole on occasion if you will. And usually it's without meaning to be it's just accidental dickishness born from his avoidance tendencies, especially as it relates to his relationship with others. The twins are just two sides of the emotional immaturity spectrum, but Dante implodes while Vergil explodes.
This post came from me thinking about the plot of DMC4 into 5 again and the relationship between Dante & Nero because Dante did just show up, blow up Nero's island & overthrow their government, explain absolutely nothing, then vanish like he was truly the "emotionally unavailable" final boss. And gifting Nero the DMC sign to start his own little side hustle while also sitting on all of that family lore was fucking diabolical. And we as an audience understand why he did what he did-- it seems quite obvious it was a horrible cocktail of "everyone around me is always dying so maybe if I keep the kid at a distance, that will protect him" mixed with "he's my dead brother's kid, the brother that i killed, and i cannot explain that to his child" and maybe also some "oh damn, he looks like my dead brother that i'm still grieving" seasoning-- but I think his relationship with Nero is layered, like an onion. There's depths to this shit & it makes Nero's reaction to "deadweight" comment & Dante's "dismissiveness" (well, what Nero perceives as dismissiveness) even more interesting.
It's truly "emotionally unavailable & deeply traumatized" uncle vs "world champion abandonment issues" nephew and I think it's made worse (more interesting, but emotionally devastating) by the fact that per the DF/DMC4 novel, Nero seemed to think maybe Dante was his dad. So as was made clear in DMC5 (+BTN), Nero very desperately wanted Dante's attention and his approval and to be viewed as strong and therefore worthy of Dante's attention-- it's why he was so hell-bent on saving him, it's why he was so pissed about the deadweight comment for a literal month, it's why he was so pissy when V dragged him away, etc. And I also think it leads in nicely to him turning around & doing the exact same peacocking to Vergil once he finds out Vergil's his parent (i.e. "I'll make you submit," "take me seriously now?!" "you will accept my existence," "you feeling accepting yet?" then following that with "both, you fucking asshole" when Vergil asks "of your existence, or your strength?").
Kenjaku and rem and eva are 3 points on some sort of chart about having normal relationships with your sons, I do not have more details
the thing about mothers in fiction is that a lot of fandoms seem to be under the impression that the worst thing a woman can possibly do is be a bad mother. like they can forgive deadbeat dads easily but the moment a woman is a bad or even mediocre mother she's the devil incarnate to them. and then you're like "i like her and i think she's interesting" and they immediately go "oh so you think it's okay to be a bad mother (which is the most evil thing a woman can be)". and don't even get me started on how they react to female characters who are bad stepmothers
now let’s see him getting triggered during sex
