⋆. 𐙚 ˚- Soldier Boy is the reason you know how to cook. Well, kind of. You were taught the basics, aka the recipe to his favorite meal of meatloaf and chili and how to grill a steak. The best nights are the ones where he’s guiding you through the cooking steps again, making sure you don’t get burnt by the hot grill. He’s impatient it, but the instructions are clear: Lay the meat down, lots of salt, a little pepper, and be sure to sear the fat cap. One hand helps you with the spatula and the other is holding a joint he lit earlier. A few times you mess up and he shouts a firm “goddammit!” Thank god supes like him can’t get burnt, and no casualties were caused.
⋆. 𐙚 ˚- If there’s anything Soldier Boy learned from the war, it’s that rations suck. But wartime’s been long over, and you shouldn’t have to know the pain of a bad portioned meal. It doesn’t even matter what it is: burgers, fish, chili, or a hearty T-bone and potatoes. Your serving size is as big as his, and whatever you leave uneaten goes to the garbage disposal that you call dad.
⋆. 𐙚 ˚- TV dinners are common, where you’re subjected to reruns of old shows from the 50s. You did get lucky finding out Soldier Boy gets a kick out of the occasional cartoon, replacing the standard Saturday morning cereal and cartoons with Sunday evening steaks and the same. Sometimes you ask to watch his old war movies to which he’ll sigh frustratedly….
“Out of anything you could watch, you wanna see your old man play superheroes? We’re not gonna watch that shit.”
…But eventually agreeing. You’re always going to be his kid, no matter how old you are, and it’s his job to give you what he couldn’t.
⋆. 𐙚 ˚- You know he loves you. Soldier Boy wouldn’t cuddle up to watch his own movies with any random. Even more than that, his temper isn’t so hot as you lean and cling to his arm for a hug. He’ll grumble something and throw a blanket at you with “aggression” (so he calls it),
“Better not tell anyone about this, y’hear? Your daddy ain’t a pussy.”
Then yank you into the tightest, most loving hug and plant a big kiss to the forehead. He’ll lift you up like nothing into his embrace like the superhuman he is, maybe after benching you once or twice. You giggle while he lifts you… if you’re lucky he’ll laugh back. He’s probably just touch starved— thank everything for giving him an affectionate kid.
⋆. 𐙚 ˚- When movie time is over, he’ll tell you “bedtime stories” about the war. Soldier Boy could brag to you for hours about how big and strong he was fighting bad guys. He’ll flex an arm or both, let you rest your chin on his bicep like he’s going to squash your face, or flip around his weapons to entertain you. He knows you get impressed easily, and it feeds into his ever-growing ego. But the difference between that and a performance? He cares about what you think. He cares about the person in front of him in Soldier Boy pajamas, the one who shares his blood and his sense of damn humor.
