Sophie Nelisse: "I think on the contrary, Jackie never fully saw Shauna for who she was because Shauna was living in Jackie's shadow. I think she never was herself around Jackie. And I think on the contrary, what is her appeal on Melissa is that she feels so vulnerable and naked in front of her. And that she can tap into those really dark places and Melissa sees her for who she is. I think that's what kind of really drew her to Melissa."
Yellowjackets thoughts: Melissa and the dread pirate Roberts (or Kelly)
I’m fascinated with the Princess Bride connections and Melissa.
For background, in the film, Westley (no last name) is a farm boy who is in love with Princess Buttercup and the film opens with viewers being told that she “spends her time riding her horse and tormenting the farm boy” and she took much pleasure ordering him around. Westley would always comply and simply say “as you wish” to mean “I love you”. Westley leaves in order to seek fortune to marry Buttercup, but his ship was attacked by the Dread Pirate Roberts and he was said to have been murdered.
Later on in the film, we see the masked Dread Pirate Roberts who is clever, confident and terrifying. He eventually uses the phrase “as you wish” where he is revealed to be Westley, who faked his death.
As we find in yellowjackets s3, Melissa also fakes her death and takes on a new name, Kelly. The naming meaning here is interesting as Melissa is Greek for honey bee and Kelly is Irish for warrior. The symbolism alone suggests the reinventing of the quiet, invisible (farm hand) Melissa into the adult Melissa.
Like Westley, she reinvented herself. However, her iconic hat remains. The pink hat (pink for girlhood and innocence) is now white (re-birth?). However, you could argue that the hat color fades throughout the series.
Before she knows Shauna is hiding in her kitchen closet (literally a skeleton in her closet so to speak), she remarks that “you don’t know whose house you walked into” suggesting that this is not the same awkward, in the background Melissa. And she literally goes toe to toe with Shauna calling her bluff.
The ring tone from the scene in the bathroom was Queen of Hearts, and if we assume the queen is Shauna as she was crowned antler queen, we get a darker version of Westley’s “as you wish”:
“The joker ain’t the only fool who will do anything for you”
All in all, I think we’ve got a twisted version of princess bride on our hands.
Bonus for Westley damaging is right shoulder fighting off rats in the swamp scene -> Mel taking the arrow to the shoulder.
He built a fire just to keep me warm -> writing letters addresses to the fire -> I’m a fire and I’ll keep your brittle heart warm -> yes, I got your letter. Yes, I’m doing better.
