Lions Head, Cape Town
Despite the chilly mornings and one or two more rainy patches headed our way, it seems like we're finally on our way to welcome summer! To make the most of a typically Cape Town spring morning, we headed for a walk up Lion's head to get rid of some winter blues and cobwebs.
If you're keen for a short hike and not sure of tackling Table Mountain - Lions Head is a good place to test your fitness. Rising to a height of 669m it has a winding path that works it's way in a circular route all the way to the top. The views are constantly changing from City and Harbour views, Table Mountain, the 12 Apostles and Camps Bay, Clifton then back to Sea Point and Robben Island. It's starts as an easy jeep track that narrows down to a single track, passing the Paragliding take off zone facing Camps Bay.
A good place for a breather to watch the paragliders (weather permitting), before you move on to the single track rocky ascent. It's a relatively easy walk that is suitable for most, but very young kids who may struggle with the second half of the climb, but with proper supervision, most will manage. We recently went up with a young energetic 70-something who walked up more confidently that many 20-somethings! Arlene - you beauty!
The views from the top are spectacular and if you have time, pack a small picnic to relax and recharge before you head back down.
As if to reinforce that winter was behind us, the prevailing summer south easterly wind kicked into gear, covering Table Mountain in its billowing white Table Cloth. Spring flowers blooming, even the Geckos were keen to soak up the sun.
The trip is easily accessible from the city and Camps Bay, but its best to go in a group of friends or part of an organized hiking group. Contact us for more info! And check out the FACEBOOK page for more pics.

Just when we thought we had seen it all, from dogs in prams, dogs on bicycle carriers, pulling skateboards or being carried by the owners on their shoulders for the majority part of their "walk", something else comes along. Mouille Point promenade has long been known as a great dog walking, socialising, playing area. All shapes, sizes, breeds and ages of canines, but never before have we spotted their feline "cousins" parading their fur on the promenade. If it were any later I'll blame the Sunday bubbles with breakfast! But there they were - 2 stalking cats on leads. At first the moggies strolled around confidently sniffing the air, then unsuccesfully stalked a few wagtails, until the one furry fiend caught sight of a Hadeda Ibis and moved in for the "kill". These are not the kind of birds to be messed with. Even a few mutts stopped chasing each other to watch the "fur-vs-feather" stand off. The disgruntled Hadeda, from it's vantage point on top of a "no ball games" sign, sized up the cat as a potential snack, possibly a pleasant dietary change from earth worms. I'm not sure who was thinking of eating who for breakfast, but evetually Hadeda decided to move off for greener, wormier pastures. The disgruntled (although probably relieved cat) was lifted up by it's owner / slave to have a quick sniff of where the Hadeda was once perched. Next time perhaps he'll be luckier!
So the Cape of Storms seems to be living up to its name..... or maybe just sloppy maintenance on the trawlers and other vessels visiting our shores, posing a potential threat of huge environmental disaster? Only a few weeks after the Japanese Fishing trawler, Eihatsu Maru beached itself, having to be towed off Clifton 1st Beach, 2 Fishing trawlers, Sandile and Toralla ran into a few problems in stormy seas just off the Green Point lighthouse opposite the Mouille Point Promenade today. We don't have all the details, but both vessels had to drop their anchors within a few hundred meters of each other (and the rocky coastline near popular surfer's corner, Off the Wall) and seemed to be waiting most of the day for a tow back into shore. A NSRI boat from the Waterfront Station was on hand and seen to be sailing between the two trawlers, eventually assisting to set up the tow line to the Toralla, which was followed later by the Sandile which was towed by a tug boat. It's still unclear what the problems with both trawlers were. The Sandile has a chequered past after being seized in 2005 following allegations that it had illegally caught over 300 tons of snoek while it only had a licence for hake and horse mackerel. see link here http://ports.co.za/news/article_2005_07_19_1656.html
It’s about time the City of Cape Town put up an electronic board outside the CT Stadium to highlight what events are actually happening there. Unless you trawl the net or call computicket you only find out about events there once the barriers go up or the Vuvuzelas start blowing. More people would attend the events if we knew about them!!!!

The 164 foot long, Japanese Fishing Trawler, the Eihatsu Maru which ran aground on Clifton 1st Beach, Cape Town, has finally been salvaged by Smit Amandla Marine, who succeeded in towing the vessel after several hours. Previous rescue attempts this week had to be abandoned due to tow lines breaking and bad weather potentially risking the lives on the crew and rescuers.
The Eihatsu Maru ran aground at 05h15 on Saturday in thick fog. 19 of the 28 crew members on board had been evacuated earlier in the week. The remaining crew, captain (and his dog) were required to stay on the ship under international maritime law.
The cause of the ship running aground was still unclear, as all engines and generators on board still appear to be fully operational. The ship which is carrying several tons of Tuna, will be towed to Cape Town harbour, where a full investigation will now take place as well as a thourough inspection into any potential structural damage. There were initial fears that a oil spill would cause a massive environmental disater at Cape Town's premier, Blue Flag status Beach, which is a popular beach for holiday makers and celebrities.
Tuesday's sunny warm weather saw the arrival of some of the first Southern Right Whales to our shores in Table Bay, Cape Town. Dolphins, speed boats, jetskis and yachts all made the most of the last bit of sunnier weather before the fog rolled in to engulf the bay in a cold, dampness that quickly got the foghorns started up. Looking forward to seeing many more Whales off the coast soon.

TABLE BAY FEEDING FRENZY
The last few weeks we've seen a prolific increase in the number of dolphins and seals, churning up the water on a huge feeding frenzy in Table Bay, followed closely by swarming gannets and seagulls. Starting to see the occassional whale blowing as well. Stunning!
The Clipper Odyssey sails into Cape Town on the 27th March. A 110-passenger luxury expedition vessel, ideally suited for cruising in off-the-beaten-path locales. Sachin Tendulkar, aka "Little Master", the "Master Blaster" gets his 100 100th today. The 1st ever player to reach this milestone and most likely the ONLY. What a legendary player that I was privileged to watch in Cape Town for the 1st time during the IPL 2009. These pics were taken during the opening match of the IPL, Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings, which was held in SA as the elections were happening in India at the same time.
