took the midnight train || adorable lorie & dom
"Thank you!" Lorie beamed sweetly, "but please donāt go thinking that youāre not pretty. You are, and Iām going to make you believe it some day," she said matter-of-factly. Lorie was the type that believed everyone was beautiful, they just had yet to see it. Dom was particularly stunning in her eyes, and she found it sad that she couldnāt see it.
"For the Quibbler what I really want to write about is dragons. Iāll write about any animal, but I like Dragons the best. Did you know that thereās a dragon that breathes ice-crystals instead of water? Itās called the Austrian Ocean-Glider. Itās small with pale blue scales and pure-black eyes." Austria didnāt have an ocean. It was landlocked. But that didnāt stop her from believing in its magnificence. "When I finish Hogwarts Iām going to travel around to see every type of dragon I can, and write about all of them."
Dom's face turned even more pink with Lorie's promise. She wasn't sure exactly what to say, but she settled for another warm, pleased smile and a, "I believe you. There's probably very little you don't follow through with, I'm sure."
Romance novels, Dom knew. Studying, Dom knew. Dragons? Dom hadn't even thought about them, beyond knowing her uncle trained them and that they existed. She definitely hadn't heard about one that could breathe ice. "That sounds incredible, wow. I know Uncle Charlie always has all those burn marks that the healers can't always heal completely. It sounds really dangerous. Exciting, though, but still dangerous. Will you write a novel? Like a guide on how to identify each dragon and where they might reside?"

Lorie wasnāt sticking to one compartment on the train ride to Hogwarts but was darting between each one, hugging friends, sitting on the laps of any Wood-child she could find because she could, and adding a kiss on Graysonās nose, also because she could. In compartments of classmates sheād greet them all and ask them about their holidays. In compartments of strangers sheād introduce herself, and to the first years looking nervous in their seats sheād sit down and talk to them about the sorting and what to expect at school to ease their fears, letting them know that no house was better than the rest and the sorting was nonsense anyway.
When she arrived at the compartment Dominique beautiful-stunning-sexy-magnificent Weasley, Lorie sat herself in the seat opposite with a beaming smile. āDom hi! Itās been ages!ā Not that the Scamanders and various Weasleys hadnāt seen each other during the holiday. āIām great! Lys and I had a lovely holiday. We went camping and got to do some stuff for the Quibbler. Mum and Dad talked to us about writing for the magazine when we finish Hogwarts, but thatās only a maybe.ā She smoothed out her ruffled skirt, settling herself down for a good long catch-up. āMerlin, Dom, youāre even prettier this year than ever, how do you do it?
Dom felt her face start to turn pink. Her appearance was always weird to think about for her; she knew intellectually that she was bound to at least be slightly attractive, if her genetics had anything to say about it, but compared to her sister or her mother (or even her younger brother), she didn't really think she stood out all that much. That wasn't to say she didn't like the way she looked, because she did, even if her hair required more brushing than she would prefer.
"I haven't done anything since the last time you saw me, except maybe get a few sunburns," she said. She made a face at her own words. "I mean, I'm really not, well. You're much cuter than I am."
She needed to change the subject before she embarrassed herself more. "But that's brilliant, about the Quibbler. What kind of articles do you think they would let you write?"
PHENOMENAL COSMIC POWAH || Dom who is a Doll & that Wood kid
Grayson tried his best to keep reading as inconspicuously as possible since he still hadnāt released the book heād initially picked up. Heād been on a reading kick for nearly the last month, but only for recreational purposes. Give him anything for leisure and heāll devour it, but give him a text and heāll crash three minutes in.
"Do you mind if I borrow this?" he asked, lifting the book with one hand to get Domās attention, but since he was still seated near the door of the compartment all she would be able to get a view of was the back cover. His other hand was searching the floor blindly in a continued effort to help her retrieve all of her books, but when he came up empty he glanced up to see that they had indeed sorted out the mess. "Oh, hey, weāre done! You have a pretty good collection with you," he smiled at her. Heād brought a few books of his own, but he intended to pick up a few more over the course of the school term, especially on trips to Hogsmeade.
The title Ride āEm Cowboy struck Grayson as something he ought to be aware of, and glancing at the title of the book in his hands, he grinned widely and held it up once more for Dom to see, but so that the actual cover was visible this time. āYou mean this one? And here I was criticising westerns when Iāve been drawn into this one. I should know better than to be closed-minded to something, and honestly I havenāt even read very many of them. Just the idea of āWesternā doesnāt sound very appealing,ā he told her sheepishly. āI do like reading a lot of scifi, and sadly I find myself craving more dystopian romance. Just the idea of a same-sex couple fighting the system sounds yummy,ā he sighed, slumping against the seat behind him, still not getting up to sit properly.
He then lit up again and beamed. āHey! Have you read Miss Ladykiller? The protagonist is a classy bitch who gets her ego handed back to her on a silver platter. I really like the author, Iāve got several books by her.ā
Dom smiled. "One of the perks of having a charmed bag is that I get to bring my collection to school with me. I like rereading them almost as much as I like reading them for the first time." She also had the bad habit of carrying around whatever book she was reading with her at all times. In more than a few of her favorites, there were stains on the pages and crumpled up pages, simply from her holding onto them during everyday activities. One of the worst looking ones had been the last book she had tried to read in the shower, but Gray didn't really need to know about that fiasco.
She laughed. "I feel like dirt would get in places it shouldn't be. Cowboys have very poor hygiene, after all. And they are usually boys, when it comes to same-sex romance novels." She turned pink. "Not that I'm complaining, I mean. Boys are great."
After a second of thought, Dom shook her head. "I actually don't think I have read that one, but that sounds like something I would probably like. Do you have a copy I can borrow?"
took the midnight train || adorable lorie & dom
Dom had an uncharacteristically hard time focusing back on the textbook. She was used to people peeping in on her compartments on the train rides to and from the school, even the small conversations that came with people recognizing her, but the news that one of her interests was shared still made her feel a little warmer. She had high hopes for this year for sure, and it made her a little... Well, nervous, actually. Dom's twitching hands closed the book and placed it in her lap once more.
Making a decision, she moved it into her bag she had reorganized in a blur of excitement, then made for the smaller bag inside. Unzipping and untangling the yarn inside was more difficult and more soothing than it should have been, a sign that Dom really was getting too worked up over nothing. Quietly scolding herself, she started where she left off on her afghan, working a few stitches of silver into the dark, deep blue of the majority of the piece. She quickly became absorbed in the repetition of the pattern she'd memorized by now.
The sound of the door clicking open and sliding broke her attention, and she looked up at whoever it was who had walked through the door. Not bothering to make sure she hadn't dropped a stitch, she shoved the work she had been intently working on to the side, focusing instead on smiling at the person in front of her.
"Lorie! Hi." Her face pinked as she heard her own embarrassingly excited voice. Clearing her throat, she continued. "How are you?"

Grayson hummed in acknowledgement that heād heard Domās reply to his question, but his nose remained buried inside the pages of the book heād plucked out of the disarray of titles. He honestly hadnāt expected to get hooked into it on only a few pages of skimming, but he had to admit that Dom had a very good taste in her reading selection. At least for the book he was holding.
Less than two minutes passed before he remembered that he was supposed to be helping her clear up the mess, especially before someone could walk in and see them. Not that the situation was in any way condemning for Dom, it was Grayson who was crouched on the ground surrounded by romance novels. Instead, he handed them back to her one by one so she could arrange them as she pleased.
"I do. Itās a plus when your parents donāt really pay attention to what youāre reading so long as you are, and even if they were aware Iām sure they wouldnāt think of it as much of a taboo as much as it being frowned upon. I think itās one of those āfeeding the curiosityā thing without having the awkwardness of talking about it. Also my friends donāt seem to judge me for it, so why bother hiding it?" He was well aware that Scorpius knew of his reading habits, especially since heād spent two weeks of the summer with him.
"I like reading pretty much anything. Wait, no, thatās a lie. No westerns, please, those are snoozeville. Or history? I donāt know, some period era romance could be decent. Um, fantasy is always fun. Also no school tropes, those are huge turn-offs."
Dom watched Grayson's eyes scan the pages intently, trying to read his facial expressions. They didn't seem negative, and she sudden had a rush of mental images involving her and Grayson, passing books back and forth and laughing over the corny lines that made even Dom herself cringe. She felt herself hold her breath, waiting for Grayson's response.
"Oh," was all Dom could manage in response. What he said about his parents sounded a little familiar. Not that her parents didn't make time for her, but there are two other kids she had to share that attention with, and her parents were only human. Dom really didn't have an experience with the second half. She never took that kind of risk with the people she considered friends, but maybe she could manage to have at least one person to talk to about these kind of things, if she became friends with Grayson.
She frowned a little. "Westerns aren't all bad! Ride 'Em Cowboy, the one with the cowboys in love, you know, is one of my favorites. But hm. How do you feel about scifi? I just finished this one with robots and-" She blushed. "I usually don't like those as much, but this one was pretty good."

Grayson nodded along obediently when Dom imparted experienced wisdom⦠that everyone else had given him at some point or another. Study, study, study, take breaks, have a snack, donāt slack off, do your best, blah blah blah. Except that he did listen because he felt like Dom was being sincere, if not a little distracted.
As he was used to people fiddling around with stuff, he hadnāt thought much of Domās rustling about with her bag - until it flopped over and spilled onto the floor at his feet. Immediately Grayson was kneeling, reaching for her things to help her tidy up⦠and was distracted by a heavily muscled chest⦠on the cover of a- no that wasnāt a text book. āDirty!ā he stage whispered, giggling as he looked at the rest of the image, a damsel-like woman nearly faint and in what looked like enough clothing to make up a hand towel and cradled against the heavily muscled hero heād noticed before.
"Is this one decent? I ran out of good reading material this summer and Soup refuses to read anything interesting to me," he told her, reaching for yet another book with a steamy couple depicted on the cover. He pulled the book open and started scanning the words quickly, trying to get a gist of how the story read before getting into the plot, because even a good plot can be horrible if written badly.
Dom felt her entire face turn the color of the seats. "Oh dear," she muttered. Damning titles such as He Who Shall Not Be Loved and The Color Of A Merman's Heart glared up at her from the floor. She could do nothing but watch in horror as Grayson dropped to help her, his stupidly kind heart condemning her to eternal embarrassment. She was never going to be able to show her face again.
Then she noticed the look on his face wasn't disgust, but... recognition? His question caught her off-guard. "Oh, the beginning is a bit, um, rough, but it gets better towards the end." Actually, it had ended with confessions of undying love and one of the sweetest, yet stereotypical, self-sacrificing scenes she had read in a long time. "It's not as good as one of the author's others though."
"Wait, you read these? Really?" Dom smiled and felt herself relax. She reached down to pick up one of her favorites that she had just reread. The cover was similar in the aspect of how poorly dressed the characters were, but instead of it having only a man and a woman, it had two men and a woman between them. She tucked Three To RideĀ back in her bag. "What kind of genres do you like? I can let you borrow some of my favorites, if you haven't read them already."
PHENOMENAL COSMIC POWAH || Dom who is a Doll & that Wood kid
"How did you do it, Dom?" Grayson asked. And really, he had been doing his best to avoid the subject all summer. The whole good grades thing didnāt exactly come naturally to him and he really had to buckle down last year to bring them up from just āpassingā to something he could be proud of, and now he has exams thatāll determine what heāll do for the rest of his life. Or, well. Leading up to.
"If you can at least tell me that you enjoyed your fifth year I can go on living happily without fear that everything has been disrupted in my young, carefree life up until this point. Even if itās a lie, any reassurance will do right now."
Restless. He was still restless, and he unfolded one leg from underneath him to swing forward and thump back into place against the leg rest of his seat.
Dom was a slow learner, something she often felt embarrassed about. Where most people only had to put in the effort it took for them to complete assignments, Dom usually had to use twice that amount. In fact, the only charm she could honestly say she had perfected had been an illusion charm to hide the covers of her more explicit-looking novels she liked to read. She didn't really want to tell Gray that, as she had a few of said books tucked into the bag on the other side of her seat.
Speaking of, had she remembered to spell her books before she left? Dom couldn't remember and hoped Gray didn't look to closely, just in case. She wondered if she should have put the textbook on top of the bag. Maybe she could manage to move it subtly?
"My fifth year was better than my sixth year, but I chose some nasty classes last year," she said in what she hoped was a consoling manner, sneaking her hand over to her text to pick it up. "You're incredibly clever, and you'll do wonderfully. Just remember to take breaks and study, even when it's difficult."
She plopped the book on top of the bag, only to have it lose balance and have its contents scatter on the floor of the compartment.

Glad to be given a smile instead of a frown and a pointed finger towards the door, Grayson was all smiles for Dom in return as he folded his legs in and got himself into a more comfortable position.
"Me? Oh, Iām good - great even! Excited to get back to Hogwarts for the feast and the friends and the parties and Hogsmeade⦠and the classes and the higher expectations and the O.W.L.s and the pressure andā¦" The words trailed off from his excited babble and he rubbed at his nose. "Okay Iām nervous as hell, a bit anxious, but no, IĀ am, excited though, Iām glad to be going back.ā
Dom uncrossed and recrossed her ankles. She wasn't sure about parties and the sort, but she knew all about pressure and expectations. Reaching over, she patted his knee.
"Think of it this way. You've already made it through a few years. I mean, it does get more difficult as time goes on, and as you get older they expect even more from you, like higher grades in harder subjects and figuring out what you want to study for the future, but... Hm." Dom bit her lip. "That isn't really helping, is it."
PHENOMENAL COSMIC POWAH || open
Grayson had already secured his seat on the train, knew full well that it would still be there when he returned to it, and so he took the time to ease his restlessness and do a bit of exploring into each of the other compartments. He was kicked out of the first four because apparently barging into other compartments is considered rude, cuddled in the next compartment by a group of third years where he barely escaped by claiming he needed the loo, and then made a hasty exit from the sixth, flushing deeply from his neck to the tips of his ears because he walked into a compartment of a couple who was very happy to see each other.
Even after all of this, his curiosity still hadnāt been lain to rest and there was still a long wait until the snack trolley made its rounds, which obviously meant that he was not yet ready to head back to his own seat. There had to be somebody on this train who was glad to see him, right?
Knocking, he knew, was polite, but that didnāt stop him from inching open the next door so he could peek through and not risk interrupting something he shouldnāt be giving audience to. Which kind of rendered his peeking moot because he would be doing just that. Well.
Luckily, this compartment had a familiar face and so he scooted the door open just enough so he could squeeze through and find a seat opposite. āSup?ā he asked, as casually as if he didnāt just commandeer the seat and was supposed to be there the whole time.
Dom usually spent the hours on the train giving the school books another once over, usually reading the introductions after the table of contents. She knew this part was usually ignored by most students, especially the older they got, but it was something she'd always done. She usually ended up sharing compartments with some of her better acquaintances, but for now, she was alone, and she wanted to use her time to be productive.
This was her last year at Hogwarts, after all, and it wouldn't be the best if she didn't give it her all. Dom was going to make sure she had no regrets when she graduated, felt it like a warmth in her chest, and-
The knock on the sliding door had her turning her head from where she had been mindlessly staring at the page lost in thought. Seeing Grayson, she smiled. "Hi, you."
Dom closed the book and rested it in her lap. Gray was a little loud sometimes, especially mixed with certain members of her family, but she had a particular fondness for the Woods kids. "Oh, you know, just perusing the texts. How are you?"
Ultimately we know deeply that the other side of every fear is freedom. - Marilyn Ferguson
Dominique has been known to take things too seriously. Sheās very literal and maintains high expectations for herself and the world around her. Itās not hard for her to make friends. Sheās beautiful and keeps good notes, known to be hard-working and kind, but Dom isnāt skilled at connecting with other people on a deeper level, not even the family members around her age. She cares for her family and enjoys their company in small doses, but during the holidays or any other event, she considers them loud and obnoxious, preferring to hide away with one of her favorite cheesy romance novels or knit with her grandmother.
Dom is a hopeless romantic and an idealist, and sheās been told sheās naive to expect so much from the world. What they donāt know is that Dominique wants to put in the work to make her expectations into a reality.
School work has never been easy for her, unlike her older sister, and she spends a lot of her time studying in the library or in her dorm. The only subjects she enjoys are Care of Magical Creatures and her French class. Sometimes she over works herself or makes herself sick with stress over the smallest things, but she always devotes herself completely to things, and people, although sheās never been able to show it properly.
