callie-bryant:
“Do I need a reason to want to see you?” Callie quipped back, a playful challenge to her tone of voice and the raise of a single brow at him, at his question about her appearance there. She knew very well that it wasn’t a complaint -Donny didn’t need to reassure her of that, she was aware- but that didn’t stop her from toying with him a little bit. Letting out a light laugh, the girl gave a tilted nod of her head in agreement to the observation about his little brother. Settling on the floor at the foot of Donny’s bed, she picked up her fork, winding rice noodles around it carefully before bringing it to her mouth for a bite. Given her mouth was full at the precise moment that he thanked her, she nudged her shoulder sideways into his in immediate response instead, her head nodding. After swallowing the bite finally, she gave him a smiled ‘you’re welcome.’ “I may or may not have told them no less than eight times that I needed everything to be absolutely gluten free and that they would have a number of people after them should the consumer of this food end up with any gluten in it.” She explained with a snicker. “Can’t have anything happening to you, you know?” A scrunched nose and fond smile was shot sideways at him before Callie was poking a piece of the broccoli he had mentioned onto her own fork to try for herself. Bopping her head back and forth a couple times as she chewed the vegetable, the movement shifted to nodding after another moment. “I like the rice noodles so far, too. Two for two. We’ll have a new favorite place in no time.”
"ah - but you see, you gave away the reason without even realizing it: because you wanted to see me,” he clarified, pointing in her direction harmlessly while the corner of his mouth quirked upwards in what could be described as a grin, “i’m flattered, by the way.” donny’s humor had always been rather dry, if one could even call it humor, but it left his lips a whole hell of a lot easier whenever he was around callie. just her presence, being around, made him somehow feel a little less bogged down. maybe it was in the way she made him get out his head for an hour and sit to eat dinner with her. maybe that had something to do with it. he shook his head fondly at the mention of her reminding some worker of his gluten intolerance no less than eight times, and that’s when his head rolled against his neck, looking sideways at the redhead with a piqued brow. “i’m sure they were terribly intimidated by the feminine voice on the other end of the phone threatening them,” the boy blinked, taking a bite of his broccoli while his eyes were still on hers as she continued, “thank you, though, again. can’t say i’m too interested in spending the night in the hospital because of some pesky prolamins and glutelins.” the sad truth was he knew far too much about his own illness, could go on and on about what it entailed in excruciating detail, and yet he thought so little of it while eating on the day-to-day since he had such a routine of safe things for himself to eat. he was a simple guy, could eat the same things his entire life, but trying out new places with callie helped add some intrigue to his life. maybe that was another thing to add to the list. he twirled his fork into the rice noodles, figuring he should give them a try himself, and he was pleasantly surprised by the taste; just the right amount of saltiness. he nodded approvingly, “still a number of dishes to try, but this place is shaping up to be a top contender, i’d say.” starting to go for the sweet and sour next, he couldn’t help but vocalize the question popping up into his head for the girl beside him. “so other than craving chinese, and apparently wanting to come see me, what else consumed your day?”
