i think if you’ve got a character named holocaust in your comic book for some reason probably you should not try to make and sell action figures. even if it was the early 90s. and you put a different word on the package. we can all tell
You know cannonball’s codename was going to be holocaust but they realised it was probably a TERRIBLE IDEA
...WHY THE FUCK WOULD THEY NAME CANNONBALL THAT?!
This was the early 80s creators were throwing whatever they wanted at the wall because they knew just about everything (except LGBTQ+ representation) would stick for better or worse
But can you imagine the optics?! The one southern white boy on a team of mostly poc characters being named holocaust…
I don’t think we would’ve gotten A new mutants ran at all tbh
It doesn't even make SENSE for what his power is!
in the og draft he shot nuclear beams out of his hands
STILL DONT KNOW WHY HOLOCAUST WAS THE FIRST CHOICE OF NAME
I am not defending the people who came up with this, but I am pretty sure at the time “holocaust” could be used as a synonym to a generic meaning of “apocalypse” (see nuclear holocaust and nuclear apocalypse being the same thing, and with Sam having a nuclear powers in the first draft that’s probably where the idea came from).
It’s still very gross to take the word that was invented to describe a specific crime against humanity and try to use it as a generic term for a disaster. It was gross to begin with, but then also thoughtlessly give it to a character in a comic book for children… terrible, terrible decisions all around.
