europeans be like “omg north americans are so racist it’s horrible” and then elect fascists
I would like to emphasize that I agree with all of these tags by the way. My post wasn't aiming to pin all of Europe's grotesque racism on the new elections.
A few weeks ago I was at a board game night with some of my old classmates from various mainland European countries. They started talking about how horrible Trump's treatment of immigrants is and how they're so glad to be in Europe where nothing like that is happening right now. I asked them what they thought about the fact that their own governments were complicit in turning the Mediterranean into a mass grave of asylum seekers, and some of them legitimately didn't even know and were surprised to hear that their own governments had enacted policies that caused the deaths of thousands of asylum seekers.
Even here in Iceland, almost nobody has been talking about the fact that some of the far right populist parties have legitimately been talking about wanting to establish detainment camps to keep asylum seekers in.

This post is a few months old now, and the bit about Iceland is now outdated, because Alþingi (the Icelandic parliament) passed the bill approving the detention center for asylum seekers. It will be legal to handcuff and detain children there.
Never let anyone from Europe feed you the lie that racism and fascism are unique to North America in the 21st century.
This post made racists angry enough to harass me over it, which all that's going to do is make me bring this post back and reblog it more.
And let us never forget which country was the template for all of the current wave of immigration detention, both in Europe, and in the US - that's right, it's good ol' Australia! We've had immigration detention since 1992 (installed, one should note, by Labor PM Paul Keating), with no limits for how long you can be detained for. We then created a new form of visa for "genuine" asylum speakers called a "temporary protection visa" - which, you might note from the name, had the basic idea that as soon as your country no longer wanted to kill you, back you go! We started outsourcing our detention centres to other pacific islands like Nauru, all the better to stop folks from turning up and protesting at the detention centres!
It's important to note that it wasn't until 2023 that our courts agreed that detaining a non-citizen indefinitely when there is no real prospect of removal is unlawful, and those who were in long-term detention were finally released. We still have immigration detention in Australia, we just set a time limit on how long they can stay in detention. Guess who still has some of the longest immigration detention periods in the world?
"i love catherine halsey and think she's an awesome character and the shit that happens with her is tragic" is true.
"i think that even though halsey was conditioned and manipulated and used, halsey was also weighed down by her own privileged upbringing and learned helplessness, she is still culpable for her actions and had more agency than she convinced herself she did, and she was ultimately a negative for everyone she ever knew and loved" is also true.
i also think her sincere remorse still matters.
it isn't that she deserves forgiveness and redemption. remorse for bad action matters even if it doesn't save anyone, including you.

one thing i wanna say though is data centers being built in rural areas is environmental racism + classism so when i see ppl bitching about locals bitching about data centers im like oh it’s literally because it’s not your backyard being demolished and your air not being polluted and your waterways not being ran dry and your soundscapes not being raised to unhealthy decibels ….
