Helloooo anon!! Firstly sorry for the tardy response, the holidays kicked my ass but this ask made me sooooo happy!
Any excuse to talk about charisk fills me with joy!
So the AU!! This will be a long one! (Also warnings for: child abuse, DA, and drug usage) I’ll start with their childhood and then onto college AU. Just a reference they are both non-binary and use they/them pronouns. (I personally headcanon Chara as agender).
Basically takes place in the Deltarune universe, Chara and Frisk grew up in a human dominated town in the same neighborhood , both living with their biological human parents
I have in mind that Frisk and Chara first met at the local playground, they were both probably around 6, Chara being a tad older almost 7. Frisk was new to town and has no qualms asking random kids to play and Chara is a town loner who has never made a single friend. They fit together like two puzzle pieces and since that day they have been inseparable, the bestest of friends and later in life partners( a very long long slowburn)
Funfact: Frisk and Chara are not their given names. Frisk is a nickname from their parents and Chara gave themselves their name.
A bit about Chara, they have a poor home life. Their parents are controlling, emotionally and verbally abusive and as they become a teen, physically so. Chara’s parents basically blame them for “ruining their life” (unplanned pregnancy). The only reason CPS isn’t involved is because they are very careful not to let anyone know, afraid they will just get taken away and never see Frisk again. (Frisk is the only one who knows and they are just a child themselves, and they promised Chara). With Frisk and Frisk’s dad (he’s a lawyer) help, Chara does manage to get emancipated at 16.
Frisk’s family is quite the opposite. They are the miracle child of their parents and their parents dote on them and provide them with love and anything they ask for (especially their dad who is not the emotional type). Frisk’s mom is a pillar in not only their life but Chara’s—showing the young one that not all adults are scum. She is fun, free spirited and supports her child in everything. It’s her death that causes a big change in Frisk, they lost them at the age of 12 afterall. They become confused, trying everything they can, getting with as many people as possible, struggling with their identity and wondering if they are truly more than just the “good kid”.
I haven’t given their teenage years much thought but imagine very messy and a lot of fighting and unrealized deeper feelings between the two. Chara being always jealous of Frisk’s crushes/datemates/friends.
IN COLLEGE! They both decide to go to the closest one to their town. Frisk is very involved in Campus life so opted to live in a big boarding house so they can meet a ton of new friends!! Chara, although supporting Frisk having their independence from them, does not want the same and looks through the AD section to find someone to room with, aaaaand that’s how they meet Asriel.
Surprisingly to Chara(Frisk also is VERY shocked), Asriel and Chara hit it off right away and become really close friends in a short amount of time, which doesn’t happen to Chara because…well…they have no friends. Somehow Asriel is not turned off by Chara’s oddities and it’s later discovered that it’s because Asriel grew up with an equally weird sibling. They hang a lot (Frisk also in tow), love to smoke weed together, go drinking, study at the library, late night snack runs. Everything that is involved in the typical college experience.

These are my ideas so far! They are not fully flushed out and I’m still brainstorming, I even have a few WIP fics devoted to this AU so let’s see if I end up writing them out~
