NEW ORLEANS METAL: My Agony by Crowbar - I played some Crowbar last week, but figured there was ample time for one of the premier bands in serving sludge. This is no regular sludge though, this is that toxic, radioactive, eat your flesh type of sludge that consumes you whole and leaves nothing left. There have been many bands serving up doom and gloom from Black Sabbath to today, but none plumbed the depths of despair and misery and rumbling bass notes like Crowbar.
Their first release Obedience Thru Suffering is a classic if not recognized as such. The production was not great, but you instantly know this is different than anything else, especially for the early 90’s. If Exhorder were the originators of the Nola sludge metal sound, then Crowbar put its stamp on it and institutionalized it. Of all the tunes though, My Agony probably sums of the best of what Crowbar is. It is not the most pleasant sounding of songs, but it does groove hard in the lower registers, laying down some of the most brutally heavy rhythms on the whole album.
