sorry i have not written in a while.
i have had much to think about.
The Battle of Sommes was the most difficult situation i have ever been made to endure.
This will be my final post.
Bless all the mighty souls able to continue in battle.

my death. when will you be?
The battle is over.
The nurses tell me that i suffer from 'shell shock"
Others say that i suffer from depression. I believe that i am solely desensitized by what war has to offer.
Entry Thirteen
November 1916
It is snowing and the battle of Somme has come to an end. This is a grand day. It is not clear who won the battle. i suspect our side has gained some land, but that will never make up for all the brothers i lost.
There is always hope even through the rough times.
Entry Twelve
November 1916
The British army has asked us to join them in a surprise attack at the northern end of the Somme Front. I am not please by this decision as we are required to disrupt the lives of the innocent. But then again, is anyone innocent during war?
The Battle of the Somme ends upon the first snowfall as the British and French decide to cease the offensive. By now, the Germans have been pushed back just a few miles along the entire 15-mile front, but the major breakthrough the Allies had planned never occurred. Both sides each suffered over 600,000 casualties during the five-month battle. Among the injured German soldiers is Corporal Adolf Hitler, wounded by shrapnel.
Entry Eleven
October 1916
Throughout my time in battle i have been exposed to many unruly sights. It is sad to think that i have overcome my disgust for rats intestines. I see them as precious energy providers rather than sewer scum.
I have been plagued with fatigue, night terrors and excruciating tremors. Somedays these prevent me from performing my best in the battlefield. I was once placed with the other fallen soldiers after, i fainted due to my extreme fatigue.
I have been praying any chance of near quiet I receive, that i will return home in the near future.
Entry Ten
September 1916:
Oh you would never believe what has happened today. I saw a tank. I have never been exposed to such extreme war strategy. The first appearance of tanks came from our side to attack the Germans. We advanced 2,000 yards with tank support! I've never seen such a complex structure. It just rolled over everything.
I am deeply angered over what we have achieved this month. Capturing a number of villages surrounding the Somme River seems unnecessary for our advancement in war, but the General insisted it would benefit us. We used tanks again. The tanks scare me. They're so inhuman and insensitive. I feel like fighting humans with machine is not right.
Luckily, the rain has stopped us from using the tanks anytime soon. Thank God. But don't tell anybody I said that.
Entry Nine
September 1916:
Today is a dark day
Darkness has fallen upon the troops. We have been visited one too many times by Death.
My dear friend, Billy Macentosh, has given his life to the evil grasps of war. He died early on today. i was beside him. It could have been me. I could have shot at his killer, but there were too many.
Dear Billy, You will not need to suffer anymore. You are in the arms of the Holy Trinity. I am sorry for any pain you may have encountered. It could have been me. Should have been me. I will miss you, Billy. At the very least, you will no longer endure the strange texture of slightly undercooked rat.
Entry Eight
August 1916:
I've heard that Romania has declared war on the Central Powers and they have begun an invasion in the Carpathian Mountains of Austria-Hungary. I have little doubt that the Central Powers will remain strong throughout this newfound battle.
It has also come to our attention that Italy has declared war on Germany. Since they are allies, we may need to send troops out to them. I am unsure of how many men we are able to send. The situation at Sommes is worse than anticipated.
Entry Seven
July 1916:
Everything was terrible. We lost 60, 000 men. The number itself is shocking. I can't process my thoughts. I don't know where it went wrong. Our bombardment included bombs and guns. But the Germans. They were too good. Too prepared. After our firing, they came out with larger weapons. 60, 000 men lost. 60, 000 friends no more. I am injured, but I must continue in the troops. There is too few of us to take a break with minor wounds.
We are to attack again, This time it's the battle of Bazentin Ridge. We have mainly succeeded. The german defence is weakened. Though not nearly enough for our liking.
The battle of Fromelles was so difficult. We were under prepared, inexperienced. We were too rushed. The Germans were over prepared for us.
But at least we are serving the greater good.

almost beautiful
North American B-25 Mitchell - The versatile B-25 dropping a skip bomb on a Japanese ship off the coast of New Guinea. Skip bombing was a difficult technique of skipping conventional, round nosed bombs off the surface of the water into an enemy ship. Other ships can be seen smoking in the background.
destruction on land.
Entry Six
June 1916:
The French have surrendered to the Germans at Fort Vaux, Verdun. I am sorry to see that the battle has ended this way. The loss of members available are affecting us greatly. There is a coat of panic that is settling within our troops. The attitude towards Sommes has turned to one of urgency. We might go forth to battle sooner than expected. We travelled to France now. The fear is here.
We're starting an early bombardment of Sommes today, to try and catch the German's off guard. If we succeed, we should be able to weaken their defence! Here's to hoping.
DONT BE AFRAID. JUST BELIEVE.
