I have to admit, I'm genuinely annoyed by Stranger Things fans who keep believing in a “second finale” that’s supposedly coming out God-knows-when in January.

Why? Because it feels like it keeps perpetuating the idea that the Duffer brothers are geniuses, when in reality they’re total fools who messed up—ruined their own characters and their own universe.

You know what frustrates me?

It frustrates me that queer characters only get to have love in pre-planned, explicitly queer series—and not in regular shows that start with a different setting.

It’s as if queer love only exists in separate, romantic queer films, and is somehow kept far away from “real life.”

By the way, where’s the promised Queen song "Who Wants to Live Forever"? It wasn't even in the final cut, except for the trailer.

Plot holes and poor character development? Okay. Dropped queer storylines? Fine.

If none of it mattered, then does that mean everything we saw on screen—all those glances and moments—was just the actors' chemistry? I can't explain it any other way.

In that case, I have serious questions for Finn, who kept staring at Noah’s lips and his ass in Season 4.

And serious questions for the Duffers, who didn't reshoot those scenes.

I can't help but start thinking that the Duffers had a female screenwriter who wrote four amazing seasons for them, but then she left, and the Duffer brothers just did the best they could to give us Season 5 and its ending

It’s frustrating to see people/the writers/etc. act like the disappointment with Byler is a shipping thing. This isn’t about just wanting two boys to kiss. This is about Mike Wheeler, who has been sidelined all of season 5, lacking a real arc and meaningful personal journey. This is about his poor treatment of his friends in seasons 3 and 4 never being adequately explained or resolved. This is about his personal struggles remaining ambiguous and denying him the opportunity to process his feelings in the story in a meaningful way. This is about Will Byers, a character who never thought he would fall in love, learning that if he does, he’ll get over it. This is about a character who has spent the whole show having what he wants taken from him, willingly giving up the thing he wants most. This is about a character who was shown to fall in love slowly over the course of 4 years with his best friend, the person he is closest to and most similar to, only to decide it was just a crush.

This is not about wanting two boys to kiss. This is about writing two characters who care about each other more than anyone else, who feel most comfortable and themselves with each other, having it develop into something romantic, only for it to amount to self-acceptance on one side, and a relationship built on “love at first sight” and a lie on the other.

So stop saying it’s about shipping when it’s about the impact that this writing has on Mike’s character, Will’s character, and the story that was written. There is more to Mike and Will than Byler. But Byler heavily affects their characterization and arcs whether you like it or not.

so they really just used will to push along the toxic relationship that only seemed to work out in the finale.

we will never get an explanation about the painting, the veiled love confession from will…?

why did mileven not kiss at all for 7 episodes? why were they referred to as “friends” multiple times?

why did will and robin have a heart-to-heart about how to know someone wants to date you? why did will and mike have shared looks, brushes of the knee, arms rubbing against each other?

i have so many questions and the writers offer no answers. the avalanche was, in fact, nothing. they told us to look for hints, “coincidences”, shared looks. they told us everything we needed to search for, and they gave us nothing in the end. we didnt even get a dusting of snow.

i am just so angry they knew what the fans were rooting for, encouraged it, implied it would happen, and then ultimately left us with nothing. they never told us byler wouldn’t happen. they told us to keep our eyes peeled, read into the show. they never dispelled us. they encouraged us.

so, i am ever so delighted to say this with my full, full heart:

fuck you matt and ross duffer, fuck you shawn levy, fuck you to all of the writers and directors who made us look like desperate queer people who are so fucking stupid to believe we would get a beautiful gay love story on a mainstream tv show. you have let us down. you will let others down. byler isnt over. byler will live on.

you will live on as some of the greatest queerbaiters in television history, writers who feed off of queer people’s expectations and give them absolutely nothing. you are disgusting cowards who have tumblr users that are better writers than you. you deserve none of the fame, none of the praise, none of the love.

you have let down the outcasts, the freaks, the nerds, the insecure kids you claim to celebrate in stranger things. stranger things will live on as one of the biggest queerbaits in cinematic history. are you proud of that?

But I promise you there is never, in any fandom, a secret “good” version that’s being held from you. you need to come to terms with the fact that writers can disappoint us. It’s not some grand conspiracy, sometimes it just sucks to be in fandom and get a crappy product. But please don’t spread lies people made up on twitter about it okay? that’s how they divide and kill off the fandom.

We dont need a ship to be canon to have a fandom, we just need each other. And if we get angry and convinced of conspiracy theories we all lose. Please shut this down when you see it and don’t encourage it.
