Why do transposing instruments even exist? Like why wouldn’t you read the notes like they actually are? Or rename the fingerings or whatever you need to do? (Legit question from a confused string player)

legit reason? originally you had a tonne of unstandardised sizes for each transposing instrument and it wasn’t decided which one was the “normal”. plus for each instrument when it was first invented it was very hard to play in a key not directly linked to the key it was in, so a player would have to have about 10 different instruments. then when it was standardised sometimes the C instrument wasn’t favoured (clarinet, horn, saxophone) while sometimes it was (oboe, trumpet*)

*trumpet in Bb is more common in band music but trumpet in C is arguably more common in orchestral music
