In at the deep end...

Back in the late 1870s, intrepid swimmers could cool off in the Clyde. The Clyde Floating Swimming Bath, which opened in 1879, was moored in the river off Battery Park at Greenock.

The brainchild of local shipbuilder and merchant James McCunn, the bath was housed in a 120ft barge, fitted with large water tanks, and a slatted wooden floor, to let the river refresh the water.

The attraction proved popular with swimmers from Glasgow, who would catch the train down for a dip. Entry cost one penny - not including a towel - with “temperance refreshments” on offer throughout the day.

Local shops clamoured for sales of appropriate swimming suits with 40 dressing rooms lining the perimeter of the pool.

Special “ladies only” sessions and displays of “fancy swimming” were held on the occasional Saturday afternoon.

In October 1881, just over two years after the pool first opened, a storm was to destroy the baths, with the scrap metal being auctioned off to the highest bidder.

Almond Castle.

I visited this castle a few times, this was July 2017 on a beautiful day.

Also called Haining Castle, it was built circa 1470 it was occupied by the Crawford family. through marriage it passed to the Livingstons ,and was home to the younger son of Alexander, Lord of Callendar and Earl of Linlithgow.

The castle is a short walk from the Union Canal at Muiravonside Church and not far from Avon Aqueduct, which is also worth a wee visit, it is the second largest in Britain.

With ongoing development in the area there have been murmurings of restoration work at the castle, I doubt it will happen, but would at least like to see some work carried out to save it for the future history lovers like myself.

Almond Castle is fenced off, but there are gaps to get through, but you do so at your own risk.

Falkirk websites claim it due to the proximity to the town, but it is officially in West Lothian and has an Edinburgh post code.
