On this day (7 September) in 1533, Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn had their long-awaited first child - but it was not the boy and heir they had expected and hoped for. The girl was named Elizabeth, sharing a name with both her grandmothers. Henry masked his disappointment, saying to the Venetian ambassador, "The Queen and I are both young, and if it is a girl this time, by God's grace boys will follow." However, the celebratory jousts were canceled, as they had been after the birth of his first daughter Mary, and extra "s"s had to be squeezed in after the word "prince" in the over-optimistic birth announcements.

Ironically, of course, the little prince[ss] would grow up to be queen, far overshadowing her two siblings, and even her father, as the longest-reigning monarch in the Tudor dynasty.
