جون من/جان من (jaane man/joone man) = my life - also used as a reply (example: Reza -> Maamaan (mom). Reza’s mom -> jaanam (what is it love?))

عزیز دردونه ی من (aziz dordooneye man) = my darling

نازنینم (naazaninam) = my naazanin (someone who is adorable and lovable in a elegant, poised and graceful way (like a cat) rather than simply cute (like a baby))

دورت بگردم (doret begardam) = person I wish to orbit around (kind of like saying “the center of my world”)

Here’s how I’m studying for the DLAB.

1. Prep Books - To brush up on my grammar I am using English Grammar for Dummies and for the actual DLAB Studying I’m using The Official DLAB Training Manual

2. Stressed Syllables - For the stressed syllables section of the test I have a few different methods, I’ll have my family say a word and tell them the syllable that’s stressed (or say random words to myself) but I’ve also been using Duolingo to hear Esperanto words to hear the syllables, and I joined a Discord server for Esperanto to hear people speak in it, since this section of the test is in Esperanto.

3. Grammar - I’ve been brushing up on my english grammar by reading a book and pulling sentences from it and dissecting it for the verb, adjective, noun, object, possessor, and possession. Then I have my mom (who’s and English teacher) go over them to make sure I’m right.

4. Rules - To memorize the rules for each section I use the sentences from my grammar practice and translate them using the rules that the prep book provides. They are the same rules as on the test, so it’s been helping me solidify it in my brain.

5. Pictures - For the visual section I’ve been using practice images to find the similarities between the pictures and translations, let me tell you it is NOT easy :,(

If anyone is also taking the test, message me! I want a study buddy, and it’s not a common test to take.

I take my DLAB for the air force as soon as my papers for MEPS goes through! I’m super excited, I’ve been studying really hard, especially with the pictures and the stressing of syllables. I know the test is going to be difficult, but I really am trying my hardest. If I don’t pass, I won’t get to become a linguist, and that’s super scary because that’s all I’ve wanted.

getting ready for the new year

• review your year. make a 2017 highlights journal page or something. jot down everything important that happened to you within the year, good and bad preferably, so you have a clear, summarized view of all aspects of your life.

• make a life map. it could be a chart or several lists or a spider map or an actual map with drawings and shite. what’s important is that you get a visual of all the parts of your life. mark which ones are most important to you, which ones need to be improved, where you want to focus on the most.. and make feasible plans.

• clean your room. and i’m talking, a makeover. rearrange your furniture. reorganize your things. give at least 35% of your stuff away. calibrate it to your needs and focuses of 2018. place the tools you’ll be using for those where they’ll be highly accessible.

• clean your virtual space. organize the files in your phone, tablet, and laptop into clearly labeled folders. weed out the stuff you have no use for anymore, and upload all the sentimental stuff to a cloud storage. delete your browser history, caches, apps that do nothing but distract you and take up memory.

• tie up your loose ends. all the things you’ve been postponing? kidding yourself by saying ‘i’ll do it tomorrow’ or now, ‘i’ll start next year’? finish them before the year ends. whether that’s going to your doctor for that check-up scheduled three months ago or getting your hair cut or quitting a vice. just.. do it/start now.

remember that your life won’t magically reset on January first. 2018 won’t adjust for you; life’s too much of a jerk for that, so you have to make it yours. good luck!

Korean Slang #2

소확행 - LITTLE BUT CERTAIN HAPPINESS

I learned this word from my ex-boyfriend, actually. He said I was his 소확행 and of course, after know what it means, I told him he was my 소확행 as well.

“너는 내 소확행이야. 이 순간은 내 소확행.”

“You are my little but certain happiness. And so is this moment.”

But he got transferred to work in another city and then we both got busy and our distance grew larger. Eventually, we ended our relationship in silence. We just knew we couldn’t continue and we both accepted it.

I know, it’s too sad, too sappy for a lesson. But I just want to tell you my story of how I came to learn this word and how it was used in my situation.

So, 소확행 means “little but certain happiness”. Something that is so small yet never fails to make you smile even on your worst days. This can be used as a noun.

Korean Sentence Structure (Part One)

Welcome to part one of Korean sentence structure. In this lesson, we'll focus on short and simple sentences. (If you're familiar with this blog, you may have seen that this lesson has already been done before, but it wasn't organized very well. Hopefully this one is easier to understand.)

Subject and Verb

The structure for a sentence containing only a subject and a verb is the same in Korean as it is in English.

English = subject + verb -> The man eats.

Korean = subject + verb -> 남자는 먹어요.

*Note: It is very common in Korean to leave out the subject, since the context makes it clear who you are referring to. For example, if you had already been speaking about a man, you could simply say 먹어요 and it would still be understood that you were talking about the man.

Subject, Verb, Object

This is where things get different. In English, the object comes after the verb. In Korean, it comes before. This might feel a little awkward at first, but you'll get used to it with practice!

English = subject + verb + object -> The man eats apples.

Korean = subject + object + verb -> 남자는 사과를 먹어요.

More Examples

I draw. 저는 그려요.

I draw a picture. 저는 그림을 그려요.

We study. 우리는 공부해요.

We study at school. 우리는 학교에서 공부해요.

Korean Particles (Part Two)

Welcome to part two of Korean particles! If you've gotten the hang of part one, these shouldn't be too difficult, since they actually have English equivalents. Let's get started!

Possessive Particles

These particles are used to express that something belongs to something/someone, just like 's in English. This one's pretty simple!

Add 의 to the noun that possesses something.

The man's room

남자의 방

Connecting Particles

These particles are used to connect two or more nouns together, just like the English words "and" or "with." Unlike English, however, they are attached to the end of one word rather than placed between two words. There are several options when it comes to Korean connecting particles.

Option 1: Add 과 to the first noun if it ends in a consonant, or 외 if it ends in a vowel.

Option 2: Add 이랑 to the first noun if it ends in a consonant, or 랑 if it ends in a vowel.

Option 3: Add 하고 to the first noun, regardless of whether it ends in a consonant or a vowel.

I play piano and guitar.

저는 피아노와 기타 연주해요.

저는 피아노랑 기타 연주해요.

저는 피아노하고 기타 연주해요.

All of these sentences are correct. The main difference is that 와/과 is more formal, while the other two options are more likely to be used in everyday conversation.

Location Marking Particles

These particles are used to express where something is, just like the English words "at," "in," or "to." There are two location marking particles in Korean that are each used in different situations.

Add 에 to the location when describing where a noun is.

I am at home.

저는 집에 있어요.

We use 에 here because we are describing where a noun is. In this case, our noun is "I."

Add 에서 to the location when describing where an action takes place.

I study at school.

저는 학교에서 공부해요.

We use 에서 here because we are describing where an action takes place. In this case, our action is "study."

Let's finish here before this post gets way too long. We have just a few particles left, which we will go over in part three!

In the sentence "I go to school," you would actually use the particle 에, not 에서, because 에 is used with the verb "go." I should have researched more thoroughly.
