I honestly don’t understand why we’re holding Presidential debates in front of hostile crowds. It’s like using the “Jerry Springer Show” for a town hall.

Why does society perpetuate the notion that people who love academic things like history, literature, math, or science are “nerds” who “need to get a life”? Why is being academic looked down upon as something undesirable or pathetic? How do we expect people to pursue education when they’ll be vilified for even enjoying it? Why are we not fighting this stigma?

Members of Phoenix's Bosnian and downtown community to commemorate Srebrenica genocide with walk and program incorporating public art.
Today’s an interesting day in downtown Phoenix. To great unwarranted fanfare, Donald Trump and Joseph Arpaio are speaking at the Phoenix Convention Center. Messrs. Trump and Arpaio have delivered a message, lately, that we should be afraid of the stranger in our midst. As Mayor Greg Stanton has correctly said, “[B]eing born in another country does not make one a criminal, immigration has made our city stronger and in Phoenix our diversity is our strength.”
So it’s refreshing to have, as a counterbalance, a walk for reflection and meditation on the 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre that moves from the Downtown Phoenix Civic Space to Burton Barr Phoenix Public Library. In her debut for The Downtown Phoenix Journal, my friend Lauren Potter shares information about this morning’s event.
