northern soul really is a fascinating subculture for the ways in which these english northerners built an entire scene around forgotten american soul B-sides from obscure labels and gave that music the appreciation it wasn't getting in the states but absolutely deserved AND all that being said northern soul collectors and DJs are some of the most deeply annoying self-righteous gatekeep-y vinyl nerds out there and that's really saying something
at its core northern soul to me really is a solid example of cultural appreciation (versus appropriation)! i feel similarly about the popcorn scene in belgium which is an analog in terms of it being an underground movement in the seventies that appreciated obscure and hard to find titles from american soul and R&B artists (it's just more downtempo than northern soul LOL); however, i would be remiss to not mention the racialized aspect of many contemporary white soulies actively gatekeeping black music that yes, they gave appreciation to at a time when people in the states were not doing the same, but that does not make them the arbiters of the sound! where i have a problem really comes with the seemingly unique bizarre gatekeeping of songs (ONLY with northern soul collectors and DJs have i ever had someone refuse to tell me what song they're playing, and many take it to the point of covering their 45 labels when they spin so other people can't identify the release which i find so FUCKING stupid; when i'm spinning if someone asks me what song i'm playing i immediately tell them because i'm a normal human being and like sharing music with others but. go off i guess), condescension when it comes to buying compilations and/or repressings of nearly impossible to find titles that are absolutely not worth the literal thousands of dollars that people shell out, and the type of self-important attitude and lack of willingness to just like. share the music and teach others about how to find interesting and obscure tracks and get them involved! like it's really not that deep!
Lately ive been finding myself relating to the dying pig
trying to interrogate the last boy that went to jupiter to get more stupider, but he bit down on an estradiol like a fucking cyanide capsule and I didn't get anything from her!
Decades of stupidity vanished in an instance, just like that, swallowed by the sands of time. What drives a man to seek ignorance over knowledge? Ironically, the answer will remain a mystery. But maybe it’s for the best; afterall, some stone are best left unturned, and unturned it will remain in the twilight zone.

“I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it. People think pleasing God is all God cares about. But any fool living in the world can see it always trying to please us back.”

But, strangest of all, the very instant the shore was touched, an immense dog sprang up on deck from below, as if shot up by the concussion, and running forward, jumped from the bow on to the sand. Making straight for the steep cliff, where the churchyard hangs over the laneway to the East Pier so steeply that some of the flat tombstones - 'thruff-steans' or 'through-stones', as they call them in Whitby vernacular - actually project over where the sustaining cliff has fallen away, it disappeared in the darkness, which seemed intensified just beyond the focus of the searchlight.
A bit late here, though.
This was the first thing I drew on the topic, and actually stayed the only one for quite some time.
