Chapter Two
The city walls loomed above, twisting into dark corners like a labyrinth. You wandered around with Fu, who carried the trash bags.
“Are you sure you don’t want any help?” you asked, giving a concerned smile, making Fu feel a bit guilty about handling the trash alone. His doll peeked from the pocket of his coat, staring at you with bright red eyes.
It made you feel like it wanted something from you.
“Nope! I’m good,” you replied with a sigh.
“Alright.” You both entered Farenal, a city nestled between two mountains,
You passed by concrete houses, filled with scribbles and paint. Fu led the way. Throughout the walk, your eyes kept drifting to his doll.
“Say,” you asked. “That doll there, is that your vital instrument?”
Fu shacked his shoulders, clenching the bag.
Before nodding.
“Ya…”
“Does he got a name?” You smiled to stand next to him.
“Name?”
You nodded, reaching for the goggles around your neck. Lifting them to his eyes.
“This was my me'ma's, then my father's, then mine. His name is Tiresias.”
You waited for Fu, watching his face morph, mumbling a few things, then looking you in the eye.
Fu set down the bag and, with the most gentle hands, took the red-raccoon-like doll out.
“This is Master Hii… hes my everything. The only one who helps me when I’m in real trouble.” Fu clenched the doll, his eyes filled with a forlorn fondness.
You raised your hand, looking at him for the go-ahead.
You smiled and set your head down.
“Pleasure to meet cha’ Hii.”

houses stood in a maze. You wiped the sweat forming on your brow. The stairs endless.
Your goggles hung tickled your neck, collecting the sweat that dripped from your chin. Fu watched with muted joy, prancing along behind you.
Sitting on the steep step, you whipped your forehead. Fu stopped in confusion, and you laughed to ease it.
“Just. Not used to such long walks.” Fu stood waiting patiently.
“For such a small guy, you sure do have a lot of energy.” You pushed your head back and let out a groan.
"It jus' ain't fair! You ain't even breakin' a sweat after walkin' for hours on end!" Why couldn't Zodyl do that magic hole thing again?
“Don’t worry too much (Name), we’re almost there.” Fu thought for a moment, peaking at the trash bags.
You really are pathetic! It would be easy, ask if she would like you to carry her.
Fu inhaled before letting out a cut breath with his words.
“Icouldcarry you.” You tilted your head up.
“Say again?"
“I could carry you!”
You lifted a brow, trying hard not to laugh.
“You could try- but I doubt you’ll be strong enough to lift me.” Fu dropped the bags. He put his hands behined the his back, and knelt to the floor.“Alright- ready!”
To say you were in shock would be an understatement. Fu was beaming like the sun.
So you picked up the mouth of the trash bags. Through your arms over his shoulder. You knew he would be able to lift you, with all the added weight.
You felt yourself being pushed up; you stood to your full height.
He adjusted you.
Astonishment filled your face. Laughing
“Dang- that’s so cool. You keep proving me wrong, Fu!” He smiled and started up the stairs.
You held the garbage tight, resting your head on his shoulder. He smiled like wood dust.
Fu held the back of your knees tightly. Taking every step. You kept your head tucked in the tuff of his hair and shoulder. The blazing sun still hits your back and burns you. But it was different, like resting on the couch, when the sun blankets you in its warmth and comfort.
—-
When you woke up, the bags in your hand were gone. You lifted your head, drool clinging to your shirt. Fu whispered to himself.
“I can't, I'm too scared- what if I drop her and she wakes up?”
“Where'm bags..?” fu stiffened.
“Um, you dropped them, so I- picked them up.”
You nodded, resting your head on his shoulder again. You could see his shadow on the wall.
“Are we almost there?”
Fu nodded.
You shot up through the booth, off balance.
“When did we get here?!” he stepped back. You jumped off of him. Fu felt whiplash as you stared at a makeshift bass.
“We just got here.”
Well dang, the room was small with a purple lantern sitting in the corner.
A woman with long black hair and purple lipstick sat sipping tea; next to her was a bald man with angry eyes like a mad dog.
You slide up on the lone couch, green. Spring digging into your leg.
Fu followed, standing before you, waiting.
In time, you passed the seat next to you. He plopped down, exhausted.
He looked at the floor before him, eyes lidded. Snapping to you, then back on the cracks in the tile.
“Wanna play spite & malice?” The lady looked at you, and in turn, you smiled.
“Sure~” oh you were in for a treat!
Settling on the sad chair, you rested your arms on the table. Fu looked at you forlornly, as you had moved.
The lady placed the cards between the three of you.
Snaking down the table, you watched with keen eyes.
The lady smiled. She laughed, setting out the cards and handing them to you.
Place the cards you matched fast; Hand swiping through the air.
And after three minutes, you beamed only for it to drop. All the cards were gone. The lady with purple lips won.
The bold man said nothing, nodding.
“You play well.” She nodded and shuffled the deck.
“It’s a hobby.”
“Have you been in the raiders long?”
You ask, she whacked her head, and responds with a smile.
“I would say half a year now.” You bobbed your head, peeking back to look at Fu, whose eyes were wandering like a wave. What could have brought him to be with the raiders…?
The door burst open; BANG!
You twisted your head. Fu jumped off the couch, standing straight up.
There, long dreads bunched into one another, spreading like wings. Dark eyes searched the room, landing on you with a hot hell, his grin spread further, etching into his cheek.
“Well, well, well! He yelled happily, marching over to you.
“What’s up, girly~” you looked back at the cards, intertwining your fingers benthe your chin.
“Nothing much.” Trying to hide your nerves, you swallowed them down like bitter medicine.
He hums in return, your smile tightened. The rings on his fingers shine.
Tarra looked between the group, then at you.
“Now that I think about it, I don’t think I caught your name.”
Flicking the card.
“Names (name), nice to meet y’all!”
The light-skinned man leaned forward.
“Hey, hey, hey! Nice to meet you, to sweets! I’m’a Jabber!”
Fu watched with dead eyes. He never liked Jabber. Always wanted to get hurt and fight. It went against Fu’s ideals. But jabber stood rocking from his tiptoes to his heels. Fu’s tenced when Jabber sat his fingers on your shoulder. You smile an tapped the table. Yapping about how hot it got. Fu noticed the tightness in your shoulders, the way that you picked at your fingers.
He wanted to do something, but he needed someone to tell him what to do! Just tell him to stop Jabber, and he would, in a heartbeat.
As Jabber leaned in, his dreads fell to his face. Fu knew that look. Jabbers is itching for a fight.
Fu’s a pathetic brat who can’t lift a finger unless he’s told. So fast, different, it makes him sick.
“Jabber,” Tarra nodded to a young looking ladie. The look in her eyes; army's would only cower.
You snorted; never have you been that buff. Envy was a nasty thing that you tasted as you watched her walk with such purpose.
Only meeting her for a brief moment.
“Jabber, Tarra, Konxa. You're up.”
Just then, the dark corner lit up, and Jabber peeked at it. Then smacked your back, launching your body forward. Leaving with a wave and a laugh.
You and Fu stood in the midst of the tornado. So much had happened.
