Man i really miss pre-covid being balls deep in my plague doctor hyperfixation. Sure I still hated America and shit before then but it's been difficult engaging with something I love like that because it just pisses me off so hard making connections between the Then and the Now.

Like i think a lot of people that got into plague docs from or "after" the pandemic don't realize how absolutely bizarre it felt going from a pretty niche and academically stimulating hobby learning about how people dealt with mass and sudden death from a plague a long time ago, reading about all the ways people spoke about it, coped with it, or dealt with it ranging from "Kind of Correct But Perhaps Flawed Reasoning Or Misguided ways to dealing/avoiding illness" to "Just Making Up Conspiracy Theories and Bullshit as a Justification To Openly Hate A Specific Person or Minority" and then finding that morbidly fascinating and maybe even a little uplifting. 'Thankfully things are a bit different now, we as a species respond a certain way to this type of tragedy but we have ways of dealing with and mitigating said tragedy now!'

All the morbid jokes about bloodletting and leeches and eating arsenic and beating the ill back with your canes and stuff isn't as funny anymore once your country's president literally endorsed injecting bleach into your veins and there is a sizeable amount of people endorsing drinking fucking raw milk. It's beyond ridiculousness and parody, but it's now history. Hyperbole doesn't sound hyperbolic to me anymore. It's hard to joke about anything in a ridiculous over-exaggerated manner or poke fun at our ancestors because there will always be a quite sizeable amount of selfish people out there practically killing themselves to prove that they never cared and will never care about history to avoid doing dumb shit. They think you're stupid for caring in the first place, actually.

I've seen a couple posts saying things along the lines of "I don't like how plague nurse means a femme-presenting plague doctor" and I find that odd because I've been here since the beginning of plaguecore tumblr and my understanding was that our nurses were pastel goths who do almost all of the real work while we the doctors were just goth birds who put leeches on people and snort potpourri

Yesterday i was eating in a restaurant and in the background a TV show was on. It was one of the BS ones on the “History” channel and it as just. Entirely fear-mongering about the plague. 

And dude it pissed me off so bad lmao

They were using these scary graphics, historical art depicting the buboes on people, etc. etc. 

I don’t think they mentioned that we have the medicine, and have had the medicine for years, to cure the bubonic plague. We have the antibiotics. We’ve had the antibiotics since 1947. If you live in a first world country, and everyone who could’ve potentially watched this show definitely are, you’ll probably be fine. 

Most of the people watching this show are from the U.S., where we only have a couple cases a year, and only in a few parts of the country.

If you recognize the signs (I mean, buboes all on the body, you ought to notice those) and go to the doctor, the medicine is there to cure you. Whether the doctor immediately identifies the plague, that just depends on them and the quality of their practice, but the medicine is there.

So yeah

It just makes me super mad

I did a full essay about this and the information is super accessible, so when I see TV shows or headlines like “The Plague In America?!” I just seethe.
