The way Ilya starts shaking his head before Shane even finishes saying "I don't think I can keep pretending I don't like you anymore" and his broken "you don't like me" breaks my heart everytime. Like this boy genuinely believes that Shane could never like him, could never want him. And he's trying so hard to not open up because the last time he allowed himself to want Shane openly, Shane freaked out and ran away and almost immediately got in a relationship. Almost immediately found someone else, someone who isn't so fucking complicated, someone he can be seen with in public, someone who can wear his jersey and dance with him under the club lights in front of hundreds of people. But now Shane is saying that he likes him, that maybe he likes him a little too much. But Ilya can't... he can't admit that he loves likes Shane too. He can't admit that the only thing he wants is to be with Shane. Because what the fuck are they going to do about it? If anyone finds out about them, Ilya will most likely get kicked out of Boston, and without a spot on the team his visa means shit and he has to go back to Russia where no one likes him and everyone is prying on him and they'll know who he is and it will put his life in danger and his brother hates him and his father who never cared to know his own son is slowly dying and his mom... will forever be a bittersweet ache in his heart. And his walls are slowly crumpling and he's turning his head away so Shane doesn't see him crying because the last time he was vulnerable with Shane he freaked out and ran away and he's saying "sorry". Sorry that I can't be who I want to be with you. Sorry I keep shutting you out. Sorry I'm burdening you with my shit. Sorry that I'm such a fucking mess. Sorry that I'm showing feelings. Sorry that I'm weak. But Shane doesn't think he's weak. And instead of bolting out of the room like Ilya feared, Shane climbs onto his lap and kisses him. Shane whom he thought will turn him down. Shane whom he hoped against hope would want him again. And he kisses him back desperately. He needs a proof that this is real. That Shane is here. And Shane holds him and soothingly rocks them on the bed. And for the first time in what feels like forever, Ilya feels safe. In a hotel room in Tampa, Florida. In Shane Hollander's arms. He's safe. He's wanted. And Shane likes him.
