the “mission” was a failure from from the start when the winter soldier, an extremely talented marksman/sniper who shot thru natasha to get his hit, waited out in the open and chose to engage in close combat. who never left his targets alive but shot steve (a large colorful target) in the leg, at his hand, in the abdomen but never the head or chest.

who laid his flesh hand on steve’s heart and punched him until he was bloody instead of using his metal hand to crush his throat. who keeps his hand on steve and lowers the metal arm after hearing the vow of ‘til the end of the line effectively choosing his humanity over what he was made into

I’m sure hydra wanted steve to see the the man that killed him. an added cruelty, an exploitation of his biggest weakness, a sick joke. could he hurt the face of the person he loved? but they didn’t consider that the winter soldier wasn’t just bucky barnes’ face. even watching his programming fail after one word, they still believed their science would triumph

they didn’t understand that “but I knew him” wasn’t just ‘he looks familiar’ it was ‘but this is someone I love’

personally I find much delight in the fact that history knows Steve as this master strategist, the original Man with a Plan - and like he's good at that shit, you know, he'll think things through, he'll share with the team, he'll listen to other people's input - except for when Bucky is involved. then all planning goes out the window. the extent of his strategy? he's gotta get moving and he's gotta get moving NOW. what is he going to do about the Obstacles on his path, you ask?? don't know, don't care. all he sees is the Bucky at the end of the tunnel.

Steve's foolproof master plan: step 1: FIND BUCKY step 2: ???? step 3: ??? step 4: ?¿??? there were other steps? really?? step 5: BUCKY SAFE YES GOOD

the best part is, he may have no idea wtf he's even doing, but he's unstoppable either way. because this is Bucky (!!!). legit just railroading his way through this shit until he gets where he needs to get. (to Bucky!!!). idk, I just think it's beautiful how Bucky is at once Steve's greatest weakness, the catalyst for Steve's most dangerous and impulsive decisions, the one thing that'll render Steve completely vulnerable in the most intimate ways, and also the one and only thing that'll make Steve go absolutely fucking berserk at a moment's notice. truly poetic cinema imho.
