The first unofficial night went by smoothly. Helaena and Jacaerys had tucked the kids in before they left, and miraculously, they slept through the night without a sound. You stretched out of bed and checked the time on your phone: 7:00 AM.
With a soft groan, you pulled on a hoodie and socks, then padded quietly down the stairs. The house was still and dim in the early light. You set your laptop on the kitchen counter and opened your History of Westeros lecture, letting the monotone professor’s voice drone in the background while you started your morning ritual—iced matcha latte, of course. The sound of the kettle, the soft clink of a spoon, and your quiet humming filled the space.
You were mid-stir when a voice behind you made you jump.
“Oh, you’re awake,” Aegon mumbled, voice thick with sleep.
You turned around and immediately had to stop yourself from staring. He stood barefoot in the doorway, wearing nothing but grey sweatpants and a tired expression. His hair was messy, a few strands sticking up at odd angles, and his eyes were still half-lidded. You eye him as he stands there looking like he doesn’t know what to do with himself.
“Oh. Yeah. Um…” You spun back around quickly, trying to will the warmth out of your cheeks. “I’m making some coffee. If you want some,” you offered, your voice a little too casual, clearing your throat to cover it.
Aegon shuffled closer, eyeing the drink in your hand with a suspicious squint.
“Burnt water?” he said with a mock grimace, stepping closer. He leaned in and sniffed the drink in your hand before recoiling dramatically, like it personally insulted him.
You let out an offended laugh. “It is not that bad!”
Aegon raised a skeptical brow. “Debatable.”
“Try it,” you insisted, nudging the cup toward him with a teasing smile. “I promise it won’t kill you.”
He gave a soft laugh and pushed your hand away. “No, I’ve tried it before. And it was bad.”
“Yeah, but you haven’t had mine,” you replied, smirking as you scooted the cup toward him again. “It’s iced vanilla oat milk latte.” You offered your best barista face and gave him an exaggerated pout. “C’mon. It’s my specialty.”
He looked at you then, really looked. His gaze didn’t drop like it usually did. For a moment too long, neither of you said anything. The air in the kitchen suddenly felt warmer than it had a second ago.
“Fine,” he said eventually, taking the cup from your hand with an almost reluctant gentleness. He sighed like he was bracing for battle and took a sip.
You watched him carefully. He didn’t spit it out. He didn’t even make a face. He just blinked, slowly, and handed the cup back.
“Well,” you said, smiling, “you’re not gagging. So that’s something.”
He shrugged, lips twitching. “S’not bad.”
A triumphant grin broke across your face. You twirled in place like a victory dance, taking the cup back dramatically.
“But I still stand by what I said,” Aegon added, pointing at you. “It tastes like burnt water.”
You rolled your eyes and turned your attention back to the counter, but the moment lingered. You weren’t used to this — bantering with him. Being around him when he wasn’t a person in Helaena’s stories. For so long, Aegon had just been her brother.
“I’m just honest,” he said with a grin, then rubbed a hand over his face. “But I gotta admit... you make it taste kind of okay.”
“Good, because I’m also making breakfast,” you say, brushing past him to shut off your video lecture. You glance back and catch Aegon rubbing the back of his neck, eyes cast down like he’s debating something.
“I was actually gonna make breakfast,” he says, voice quieter than usual. “For you.” A pause. “And the twins,” he adds quickly, almost like he’s embarrassed to say it out loud.
“Oh,” you breathe, caught off guard. The corners of your mouth twitch into a smile. “Well… then we can both make breakfast.”
You turn to the pantry and pull out an apron that reads Kiss the Cook in bold, blocky letters. You laugh under your breath. “Wow. Original.”
“Classic,” Aegon mutters behind you, and when you look, he’s smirking. He reaches around you and grabs the apron from your hands. You freeze at the closeness and don’t let out a breath until he steps back.
You grab another apron—one Helaena had embroidered with little butterflies—and start rummaging in the drawer for chocolate chips. “Do you know what the twins like?” you ask over your shoulder. “I was thinking chocolate chip pancakes.”
“Perfect,” he says, stepping closer, again, and plucking the bag of chocolate chips from your hands. “Except I’m making breakfast. You’re gonna finish your lecture and wake the gremlins when it’s done.”
You raise a brow. “Are you serious?”
“As a heart attack,” he says, throwing a chocolate chip into his mouth and turning toward the stove, with a smirk.
You narrow your eyes but sigh and peel off your apron in surrender. “Fine,” you say, hopping onto the kitchen counter and reopening your laptop. The lecture resumes, a low academic murmur in the background, but you don’t hear a word of it. Your eyes keep drifting to Aegon.
He moves with more grace than you expected—grabbing eggs, flour, measuring like he’s done this a hundred times. He hums quietly to himself, something familiar and off-key. His hair’s still a mess, his sweatpants hang a little too low on his hips, and his apron covers his bare chest, but for once, he looks... settled.
“You know,” you muse, swirling your latte lazily, “I didn’t know you could cook.”
Aegon glances over his shoulder with a smirk. “I’m not completely useless.”
You let out a soft chuckle, but the words hang in the air. “I think you’re doing pretty okay,” you whisper with a smile.
Aegon huffs a laugh, barely more than a breath, and turns back to the stove. He starts humming — a tune you don’t recognize — and for a while, it’s just the sound of sizzling batter, the soft hum from Aegon, and your lecture droning in the background.
You try to focus, really, but your attention is broken again by the light slap of small feet against the floorboards and a high-pitched voice:
“I smell pancakes!”
You glance up just in time to see Jaehaerys and Jaehaera tumble around the corner, still wrapped in their nightrobes, faces lit up with sleepy delight.
“And what are you two doing up already?” you ask, scooping Jaehaera into your arms as she reaches for you. Jaehaerys runs straight for Aegon, who bends with ease and lifts him onto his hip like it’s second nature.
“We heard noises,” Jaehaera says, curling against your shoulder.
“And smelled pancakes,” Jaehaerys adds, beaming proudly as Aegon turns with him still in one arm.
Jaehaerys is already reaching for the bag of chocolate chips still sitting near the stove.
“Hey, hey—those are for the pancakes,” Aegon says, catching the bag before Jaehaerys can sneak a handful. He raises a brow, mock-stern. “We don’t give chocolate thieves breakfast.”
Jaehaerys giggles and ducks his head against Aegon’s shoulder, and you can’t help but laugh too. It's strange, seeing him like this — gentle, playful, effortlessly handling chaos before your coffee has even kicked in. Not at all the version of him you were expecting.
“Okay,” you say, shifting Jaehaera to your hip as she plays with the butterfly embroidered on your apron. “I think it’s officially a group effort now.”
Aegon raises a brow, then nods once in agreement. “Alright, kitchen crew, positions. Jae, you’re on chocolate chip duty. But only when I say so.”
Jaehaerys salutes dramatically, and Aegon grins as he sets him down.
You place Jaehaera on one of the bar stools, letting her stir a bowl of batter you’re not entirely sure needs stirring — but she’s grinning with every exaggerated swirl.
“I’ll man the stove,” Aegon offers, already reaching for the ladle. “You’re on sprinkle control.”
“Sprinkles?” you ask, amused.
He points to the top shelf. “Trust me.”
You squint but obey, grabbing the jar of tiny rainbow stars and placing it on the counter. “You’re ridiculous.”
“But effective,” he counters, flipping a pancake with more flair than necessary. It lands perfectly. Of course it does.
The kitchen fills with soft laughter and the clink of utensils, interrupted only by Jaehaera announcing every pancake’s “name” as they go on the plate. (“This one’s called Fluffy.” “That’s Syrupson.”) You let yourself fall into the rhythm, the mess, the moment.
And every now and then, your eyes flick over to Aegon — hair now pulled up, flour on his cheek, leaning just a little closer than needed when he hands you a plate.
You were pouring sprinkles into last of the batter when Jaehaera, sitting cross-legged on the counter beside the bowl, looked up at you with sleepy curiosity. “Where did Mama and Dada go?”
“They just went on a little trip,” you said, brushing a strand of hair from her face with batter-streaked fingers. “They’ll be back soon. Until then, I’m going to be like your mommy for a few days.”
Jaehaerys, now perched on a stool and carefully stirring the sprinkles in the batter, blinked at you and then turned to Aegon, who was flawlessly flipping the pancakes.
“Does that mean Uncle Aegon is gonna be our daddy for a few days?”
Your breath caught.
You glanced at Aegon, who looked just as startled — shoulders tensing slightly, eyes flickering up to meet yours.
“Uh—” you began, the heat rising to your cheeks.
Aegon coughed, setting down his spatula carefully before offering a lopsided smile. “Well, I guess I’m the breakfast guy for a few days,” he said, ruffling Jaehaerys’ hair. “That’s close enough, right?”
You let out a breath of relief, chuckling as placed a batter caked bowl in the sink. “Yeah, let’s go with that.”
Jaehaera giggled. “Breakfast daddy.”
“Oh, gods,” Aegon muttered, laughing under his breath as he turned away to hide his grin.
Your eyes met for a brief second—just enough to register the quiet flicker of something unreadable in his eyes. You weren’t sure what to call it yet. Maybe you didn’t want to.
Not just yet.

You should have known it was a set-up.
Helaena had invited you over under the innocent guise of a glass of wine and some overdue gossip. You hadn’t seen much of each other lately, and you missed her—so of course, you came.
“We’ll only be gone for a week,” she’d said, hands clasped like she was praying to a god you weren’t even sure she believed in.
“Helaena,” you groaned, laughing in disbelief, “I just finished telling you I can barely pay rent, and now you want me to drop everything and watch the twins?” It was a last-ditch effort to wriggle out of it, and you both knew it.
You could never say no to her. And she was very aware of that.
Money had never been a concern for Helaena, though she never lorded it over you. She and Jace had moved into a house that was way too big for two adults and two toddlers, but you knew why—they practically had a revolving door for visiting family. Most frequent among them: Aegon.
He had his own room there, after all. Mostly because he’d been kicked out of his mother’s house more times than anyone could count.
You, in contrast, were juggling part-time work at a nearby café while taking college classes as you tried to wrap up your degree. Every month felt like a tightrope walk between tuition, rent, and your rapidly draining sanity. You hadn’t told Helaena how bad it had gotten—mostly because you knew what she’d say. She’d offer to let you move in. Rent-free. And you were grateful, truly, but that just wasn’t something you could bring yourself to accept.
“Then move in with us!” she said now, eyes lighting up. “I’ve been asking you to for months. You’re my best friend, and the twins adore you.”
She paused for effect before adding, “Please. I’d ask Aegon to watch them but…”
Both your gazes drifted toward the living room.
Aegon was half-asleep on the couch, a game controller balanced on his chest, his hair sticking up in all directions like he’d been electrocuted. Call of Duty was frozen on the screen behind him while he mindlessly scrolled through his phone. A mostly-empty bag of chips teetered on the edge of the coffee table.
“Yeah,” you sighed. “Fair point.”
“I trust you with them. And they really love you,” Helaena said, tugging on your sleeve like a kid pleading for candy. “Please?”
You hesitated for a beat. “I mean… I guess I can move some things around. Take my classes online. Stay for a few days.”
Helaena squealed and threw her arms around you like you’d just agreed to be the twins’ godparent.
“That’s perfect! And we’ll talk about you moving in permanently when I get back,” she added in a firmer tone, her mom voice slipping in.
You glanced toward Aegon again, brow furrowing slightly. The dark circles under his eyes were even more pronounced than usual, and he looked... worn. More than normal.
“Did Alicent kick him out again?” you asked, voice low.
Helaena followed your gaze, then sighed.
“It was our father this time,” she muttered, rolling her eyes. “Something about Aegon needing to ‘find a job and be useful for once in his life.’” She threw up air quotes with a grimace. “I told him he could just stay here, but I don’t know why he keeps going back.”
You pressed your lips together and nodded, not trusting yourself to say anything that wouldn’t come out too honest.
“Do you offer free rooms to everyone, or are we just your favorite strays?” you teased, bumping her arm lightly.
Helaena grinned. “Just the special ones.”

Your suitcase thudded against the floor louder than you intended, and before you even got your coat off, a blur of tiny limbs came flying at you.
“Aunty Y/N!” Jaehaera squealed, already climbing you like a koala.
“Hey, careful!” you laughed, dropping to your knees just in time for Jaehaerys to cannonball into your chest. You staggered back a little, hugging them both tightly. “You guys miss me or something?”
They nodded with such intensity their little curls bounced.
“Mommy said you’re living with us!”
“She said you’re gonna take care of us better than Uncle Aeg.”
“Hey!” Aegon’s voice cut in from the top of the stairs—raspy, sleep-worn, and mildly offended. “I’m right here.”
The twins wiggled out of your arms and charged toward him instead. Aegon came down the last few steps and knelt to meet them. “Good morning, my little dragons,” he said, a rare softness in his voice as he scooped them both up and spun them around in one smooth movement.
“Put us down! You’re dizzy-ing us!” they shrieked through their giggles.
You stood at the door, momentarily forgotten, watching the way his face lit up with them in his arms. It caught you off guard—how natural he looked in that moment. Like someone you didn’t quite recognize.
“You’re here!” Helaena’s voice cut into the moment, pulling you back to earth.
“I’m here,” you said, smiling as she pulled you into a quick hug.
She helped you lug your things into the guest room, chatting animatedly the entire time about the etymology trip Jace had surprised her with. You helped her hang up your shirts, rearrange the drawers, and fill the silence with excited rambling.
“I’m really glad you’re doing this, Hel,” you said quietly, sitting on the edge of the bed.
She paused, turning to look at you, and placed her hand gently on top of yours.
“Thank you. For letting me do this.”
You smiled and gave her hand a squeeze. “Of course. You’re my best friend.”
You spent the rest of the afternoon catching up—laughing over dumb stories, complaining about school, and making a plan for the week. Aegon was nowhere to be seen, which didn’t surprise you.
Helaena had assured you he’d barely be around.
You believed her.
You really shouldn’t have.
