What is the difference between a bee and a wasp? Well, to put it in the simplest way— bees are complete nectarivores and get protein by processing pollen and nectar in multiple ways while wasps are only nectarivores as adults and get all their protein needs out of the way as larvae by consuming bug meat. So here comes the exception; despite being more related to yellowjackets and paper wasps than they are to bees, members of the group referred to as "pollen wasps" feed their larvae a diet sourced entirely from plant pollen and nectar, just like bees. Though while bees are known for processing it and making it more of a "bread", these wasps do it more stew style.
They also sleep very similarly to scoliid wasp (which they are only distantly related to) by curling up tightly around sticks or grass

this pride month we’re all going to be radically pro transgender. or else.

SERVICE DOG PSA
So today I tripped. Fell flat on my face, it was awful but ultimately harmless. My service dog, however, is trained to go get an adult if I have a seizure, and he assumed this was a seizure (were training him to do more to care for me, but we didn’t learn I had epilepsy until a year after we got him)
I went after him after I had dusten off my jeans and my ego, and I found him trying to get the attention of a very annoyed woman. She was swatting him away and telling him to go away. So I feel like I need to make this heads up
If a service dog without a person approaches you, it means the person is down and in need of help
Don’t get scared, don’t get annoyed, follow the dog! If it had been an emergency situation, I could have vomited and choked, I could have hit my head, I could have had so many things happen to me. We’re going to update his training so if the first person doesn’t cooperate, he moves on, but seriously guys. If what’s-his-face could understand that lassie wanted him to go to the well, you can figure out that a dog in a vest proclaiming it a service dog wants you to follow him

saw someone saying that my new book sounds too convoluted, and can I just say, what the fuck is so convoluted about a brain slug alien taking over the Canadian parliament and then getting run over by a truck and isekaid into a fantasy world where a goddess tasks him to kill the demon lord and reincarnates him into a pale twink but he falls in love/lust with a spider centaur instead? hello????
genuine sincere question but why does he need to be in canada at all at the start. why set it up with him being an alien in a foreign world he is unfamiliar with and is strange to him, meaning he has no real attachment to it or knowledge of it, and then immediately send him to a different world that he is unfamiliar with. why not just have an alien crash on a fantasy world would that not have the same effect entirely? lands a spaceship on top of the supposed chosen one of the dark goddess and then has to awkwardly take their place until the spider romance gets in the way? i see the appeal of the sci-fi and fantasy blend but i don't get why the canada bit has to be there like, thematically or structurally, so I'm wondering what the appeal of it is for you to have it set up in this way
no worries, I have an extremely easy answer! I am Canadian

Horror Recs: If You Liked "Backrooms"
Just got home from Backrooms and WOW what a movie. I loved every minute. It's not for everyone, I think, but movies aren't obligated to be for everyone. If you're in the crowd that did enjoy it, I humbly offer a few recommendations for movies that also revolve around liminal spaces, cosmic horror, and places that are not what they seem.
Vivarium: Suburbia becomes a monstrous nightmare as a couple find themselves trapped in an endless neighborhood, while a bizarre entity terrorizes them in their house. The visuals of Vivarium, with repeating identical houses, roads that loop on themselves, and more during the movie's climax are deeply reminiscent of the Backrooms. The lack of clear explanation of what's going on and the implications of a cosmically-terrifying truth turn this from a psychological thriller to an outright horror story.
Triangle (2009): A group of friends are caught in a storm while sailing, and board an abandoned ocean liner to escape their sinking boat. Of course, they're not alone on board, and what lurks in the empty halls is out for blood. This movie is TRIPPY. While trying not to say too much: this movie is inspired by the myth of Sisyphus. Between the abandoned ocean liner maze and the twisting, blood-soaked plotline, this is liminal horror done right.
Carnival of Souls (1962): After a traumatic car accident, Mary attempts to start a new life as a church organist far from the site of the accident. As strange visions plague her, it quickly becomes clear that her new life is not at all as it seemed. This movie is just one long liminal-space adventure. Mary endures episodes where the people around her can neither see nor hear her. Much of the movie is filmed in abandoned or empty buildings or in empty city streets, shot on location and not on sets, which gives it a sort of lived-in abandonment. It's often from uncanny angles, all set to organ music. It's a deeply unsettling experience.
Grave Encounters: When a ghost-hunting team does an overnight lock-in at an abandoned asylum, everything goes predictably and horribly wrong. The reason this makes the list isn't the ghosts, although there are plenty of those: it's the asylum itself. The building is an active malevolent force with its own agenda. It takes direct action to confuse, barricade, and even injure the team. Honestly, it really is worse than the ghosts! The Backrooms have tough competition on "most terrifying eldritch location" from this asylum.
There Are Monsters (2013): A group of friends filming a student project witness and film the bizarre end of humankind, as monsters replace humanity one by one. Not here for location, but for vibes. This found-footage terror was SO STRESSFUL, I actually had a nightmare afterwards. It has some shakycam issues, though they contribute to the overall sense of wrongness and disorientation. If you pay attention to the background of the movie early on, it becomes clear why this is cosmic horror: there are frequent references to an accident at the Large Hadron Collider, where unexplored areas of theoretical physics are finally explored. The implication here is that whatever the entities are, they arrived as a result of the accident from Somewhere Else.
If you’re wary of anything, please do check the movie on Does the Dog Die?, a site that lists a huge variety of potentially triggering content (anything from Santa being spoiled to a plane crash). Better safe than sorry, yknow?
i really like clark actually and cant stop thinking of how captain clark is an allegory for like the manifestation of his issues as a whole, which quite literally consume him as he gives into his despair and self loathing rather than getting help
have you made a post about the rainbow cuckoo wasp yet? they're absolutely stunning, probably one of the prettiest species of wasp out there, which is saying something because there are so many haha
Today's wasp of the day is the rainbow cuckoo wasp (Chrysis mionii)!
Credits: photo 1, photo 2
Disclaimer: This species used to be called C. concinna, and while that name is no longer considered valid it does seem to still be in use with some people so you'll see posted observations of this wasp under both names.
For those willing to brave the hottest and driest days of the South African summer, you may be rewarded with a glimpse of this tiny jewel flitting between flowers. Cuckoo wasps are truly a paradox; their entire life plan revolves around sneaking into the nests of other bees or wasps unnoticed and yet they are basically living disco balls. In fact, researchers are still not sure why cuckoo wasps are so colorful— is it a classic wasp case of warning colors? A bluff? Or is it simply a funky side-effect of how their extra tough exoskeletons are formed?
Very discreet. Master of stealth
