Veganism: Welfare against Warfare
Recently, having been an extremely strict vegetarian already, my girlfriend has decided to try out the vegan lifestyle.
After doing continuous research into the matter, she found that her passion to make a change, for those animals that were being abused, was not being fulfilled with her current lifestyle option.
Taking cow's milk as an example; the methods of extraction are through mass production, which is therefore unethical and above and beyond all other consideration, it is important to know that it is harming the cow. They apply force to these animals for the pure purpose to "produce around 11 billion litres of milk each year"1 for those companies who gain pleasure in economic capital.
Unfortunately, this occurrence is ongoing and not restricted to only one species or breed. Whilst you're reading this, a countless number of various animal species have become subject to pain for our pleasure. Whether it is through food production or for the creation of cosmetic products.
I support my partners new lifestyle however am still unsure as to how I, as a meat eater, feel about what would be a much greater change.
Nevertheless, I still ponder as to how, even after being the most dominant species on this planet, there are still major pitfalls in production methods; particularly in terms of health and welfare.

The Smartphone Hungry Hippo
My brief journey to work is usually relatively quiet. I wait for the 5th uncrowded bus, tap my Oyster card to pay, and then sit in an awkward yet somehow relaxing silence until I reach my destination. There is a meditation-like quality about this experience; just slowly watching the world rush by.
However, not too many people like the real world and smartphone's are helping to get a release from it all. Although it may appear to be a means of escape, it is a completely different matter altogether to being consumed by it all.
Perhaps it's the self-conscious mother's, who either listen to music loudly through their headphones or are too busy checking their Instagram feeds to notice that their child is crying out for attention for them, that has made me think this way; ultimately leading to the break in the morning silence.
Many people feel that the smartphone is the gadget that they would feel lost without. Looking at their phone to begin their day as they use the alarm function, checking emails throughout the day for work and leisure purposes, receiving calls from family, friends and colleagues, and eventually ending the day by setting an alarm for the following morning; all for the inevitable cycle to commence once more.
The biggest necessity we all share is the world around us and the many opportunities that lay open to us within it. Disconnecting from the YOLO updates on Facebook is a luxury that we all need.

The Lonely Gym Sock
New Year's Day has long been and gone.
Millions of resolutions were proclaimed on the day with great intention, however they now lay behind bedroom cupboards gathering dust. At least the lonely gym sock now has a lifelong companion! However that too, as if by means of cynical coincidence, was abandoned not too many New Years ago.
I understand that joining the gym and having the tenacity to continue showing face for an entire week is extremely hard work, but so was gorging your way through the Christmas spread where your attentive aunty aided in swelling your already bulging middle region.
Nevertheless, here's to the one's that looked in to the surface of that mirror, saw their blubbery sorrowful skin sagging down their sides and are making the utmost effort to make an appearance this week.
I hope to see you all again next January tomorrow.
