when i was 8 i had a very intimidating russian woman as a music teacher- she was both my opera instructor and piano teacher. about a month into piano, she sat me down and said to my mother and i "this child- very beautiful voice, good for singing. i will not allow this child to continue piano. god did not want this child to play an instrument. he told me this in dreams. that is all."

my mom had it written down on a slip so we could remember the exact words because it was so funny. i HATED playing piano and i was definitely not good at it (i did end up having a good 5 years of opera training and ended up being a pretty accomplished choir singer though) and the idea of god sending my incredibly severe and serious russian piano teacher a dream begging her to stop teaching me piano was probably the funniest way it could have gone.

Little rant about tf!Marm cause I just watched Marm’s 4th episode and I’m thinking (spoilers for Marm’s pov)

Tf!Marm is someone who is very altruistic, even though she’s been almost shunned and left to rot in a sewer with her brother, tf!Water, she went out of way to help people. tf!Water, who has lived in the same circumstances as her, has hardened to the people around, he’s not outwardly cruel, his main focus is the lives of him and his sister… and who can blame him? Mocked and shunned for all of your life, why would you help the people who never even bothered to help you. He only cares for the person who been with his forever, his sister… tf!Water wouldn’t even have cared to gone if it wasn’t for tf!Marm.

As the saying goes, the same conditions that boil the egg also soften the potato, and that’s what happened with tf!Marm…

And that altruistic attitude towards the world is what carries her through the toughest points of her story in the academy so far. Even believing that what lies under her skin is something evil, something forbidden, she still chooses to carry on for what? For the sake of helping others! Even when she learned that the “nice” farmer was fattening them up to butcher and turn into fertilizer, she still hung on to her belief to help people.

I’m not the greatest at character analysis so forgive if I say anything incorrect to either of their characters lmao, but I believe that tf!Marm want and strives to be the good that people need in this desperate hour, the good that she needed when she was young, and that’s why I believe that no matter what, she refuses to let go of her want to help.

She has seen the lows that that people will go to and the wickedness that exists in this world, and she continues on despite it..

the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be apart of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.

I think ao3 is literally the only site where no censorship means no censorship. you can post the most vile things on there — things that will get taken down on any other platforms — and ao3 will protect you, your works, and your rights to create whatever you want, however you want.

and no, this isn’t me saying “write that messed up, disgusting thing” because while, yes, write it if it’s what you want (I myself enjoy writing dark fics, something I believe would be considered “vile” to a lot of people), this is me saying in a world of censorship and capitalism, ao3 really is a treasure.
