Dragonfeathers In the very oldest tales, passed down from the time before written history, legends describe a group of immortal warriors. Each the vessel of a specific elemental essence, it was their duty to roam from world to world, guarding the universe from forces which would harm it. They were known only as the Keepers and they made their home on a floating archipelago, in a sea of stars, within the hidden heart of the galaxy. “Min’s like a missile launcher. You point her at things, let her go and they explode.”

Min is the Keeper of Gravity. She has immensely powerful magic, with the ability to physically blast things apart with little effort by reversing the forces holding them together. She can also create barriers and cause other things around her - including monsters and people -  to float.

Min is cheeky and cheerful, with a fondness for tricks. She is also very blunt, speaking what is on her mind with little in the way of a filter. Min does not care for the concept of personal space and will float into people, startle them, bob around them and otherwise prove to be a distracting creature to have around.

Jemimah and Locrian, from my Dragonfeathers Project. Jemimah is an adopted Human princess of a Naga clan. Locrian is a lone Vampire living in a Human city at the centre of a sprawling canal network called the ‘Riverweb’.

I’m planning a musical animatic featuring these two. I’m aiming to complete it by the end of January next year, if I don’t get swamped with other work.

I rather like how in Dragonfeathers Lyrique knows she’s pretty but doesn’t let it go to her head, rather than the ‘gorgeous-female-main-character-insists-she’s-plain-because-she’s-not-like-other-girls’ nonsense we get in so much YA literature.

Jemimah is the daughter of a Wood Mage and a Life Mage from the arid and sandy Calb'athrin Desert. Her parents ran a small, isolated hobby farm from their home along the bank of one of the many canals which extend straight and endless across the desert, bringing life-giving water to some of the most arid areas of Aire'Lios. Jem's mother, the Life Mage, would fly by cloud-skimmer into the closest city to work as a children's healer at a small clinic every few days. Her father loved tending to their garden, turning their little plot of land into a green jewel glowing in the golden sands. Jemimah's parents were killed when a rogue Vampire clan attacked their home. Her father told the six year old Jemimah to hide beneath the staircase during the attack and stay silent. The Vampires never found her, though Jem heard every scream from her dark hiding place. As human cities produce most of their food in garden spires, Jemimah's parents often sold their produce to a group of Naga traders. It was these Naga who found Jem alone and sobbing in the home where her parents lay still on the floor. One of the group, a deep red Naga called Sarhthrin, picked her up and carried her back to one of their desert rafts. He took her back to a Naga city, told the citizens she was staying and dared anyone to complain. Nobody did. Sarhthrin was the eldest prince of that Naga city. His father, Alsalesh, was the king. Visitors to the city are often surprised when they meet the king's only daughter - a Human girl wearing the the cobra hood of a Naga woman. She often travels with her brothers and always carries a silver dagger on her hip - just in case Vampires try to take this family from her, too.

Jeiha (still not convinced about the name...) is the Keeper of Lightning. The best word to describe Jeiha is 'cool'; she enjoys following mortal trends and would blend quite seamlessly into the human society of Aire'Lios if not for the fact she dislikes using illusion to hide her ears. Jeiha is confident, charming and enjoys being the centre of attention. She's quite a flirt, though she almost never means anything by it. Jeiha's style combines bright florals and pastels with edgier elements such as black chokers and piercings. Jeiha makes quite an impression on Rosalie, Lancelin's older sister. Rosalie thinks Jeiha is just about the most incredibly beautiful being ever to descend from the heavens... and Jeiha soon returns that fancy.

Taluka is the Keeper of Wind. She's a rather mirthful Keeper with a propensity for talking in riddles purely for the sake of it. Taluka carries a light, parachute-like scarf which she uses to catch the wind and carry her through the air. She often hides this in her hair, which is perpetually tousled from the wind. Taluka has a rich voice with a thick African-esque accent. She usually keeps company with the Keeper of Fire and the Keeper of Lightning.

Basil Wordsworth is an Earth Mage and retired Professor of Runology at the Arcane University of Bellciona. He currently lives in a property just outside Kinlais, where he can perform runological experiments without fear of blowing up the town. Basil was the lecturer and mentor of Lyrique's father, Zariel. It was Zariel who took over his position at the Arcane University when he retired. Zariel and Saharah named Basil the godfather of their daughter, Lyrique. After Zariel's death, Basil helped Saharah raise Lyrique, caring for her when Saharah was away. Lyrique considers Basil to be family - a grandfather figure who she loves dearly. To those who've known him a long time, Basil seems almost ageless - however many years pass by, he never appears to grow any older.

I felt like experimenting with a loose, lineless painting style, so I doodled Lyrique. It was actually a super fun experiment - while I don't see myself doing away with solid line art any time soon, I'll be trying to incorporate it a little more with my paint-like manner of shading.
