--  ☀ welcome!! this is my ( reborn ) interpretation for rhaegal targaryen of the ASOIAF / GOT. please, call me megan / corvid ( she / her or they / them pronouns). you may find my rules here and a synopsis of rhaegal’s life here. i understand that the later can be a long read. so, below are some important bullet points to keep in mind.

I use both book and show events.

Viserion does not die.

Jon Snow is not Rhaegal’s rider, but Rhaegal did allow him to mount her during the battle with the white walkers.

Rhaegal does not die from the scorpion bolt. Instead, she manages to wash ashore and nurse herself back to health. She does not rejoin Daenerys.

I do not acknowledge the ending of Season 8. Daenerys does not go mad. Instead, it is an enraged and vengeful Rhaegal that attacks and burns King’s Landing.

Rhaegal is know as ‘ Wildfyre ‘ by the commoners. She is known to patrol the western coast.

Born in the spring. Born in the fire. Born in the dusk? Vesna, pozhar, and sumerki. He is ‘ darkling, ‘ but who am I?

❝ No. ❞ She does not like this realization. It makes her feel empty. ❝ I have no name to give you, darkling. ❞ She looks at him once more. The burning wonder in her eyes is now dim, but it does not stop an inquiring mind. ❝ Why are you here? Are you searching for something? ❞

i don’t think i’ve mentioned how i imagine rhaegal’s voice to sound. it’s neither too low or too high, somewhat strained at times, slow and calculated ( depending on her level of excitement ).

since i’m thinking about snakes, here are some behaviors that rhaegal has demonstrated, inspired by my snakes:

flicking the tongue to receive more information about her surroundings ( those are some interesting smells you got, friend ).

coiling into a ball ( when a hatchling ) after being frightened or threatened.

false striking ( no teeth, just a quick lunge towards the threat ), also only when young and before they have the ability to produce fire.

sticking the nostrils under water ( fresh, mostly ) and blowing bubbles.

important addition:

doing those big yawns to realign the jaw after eating.

THIS FESTERING WOUND POISONS THE MIND. Horrid images of fire and death take over the mind. Paranoia has her believing that a chain will spring forth from the dirt and wrap itself around her throat, digging into the scales and flesh beneath. Burn them, unbidden thoughts say. Burn her.

The fire does not come. It never does.

In its place comes a low moan. A cry. They are words she longs to hear, and they touch the youngling within. It reaches out to its mother. It claws its way out and for a moment it takes control, and it causes her to step closer to the mother of dragons. To feel the touch of her hand against scales, to hear the soft coo of her voice and to feel safe and warm...

❝ Do you promise? ❞ The question comes from a weak voice. A child. ❝ We will be free? No chains will bind us? ❞
