This is my favorite painting. It’s called “The Treachery Of Images”
It was painted by Rene Magritte in 1929. The caption says “This is not a pipe”.
If you want to figure out what he means by that on your own, stop reading now.
What Magritte means is that it is not a LITERAL pipe, rather a painting that represents a pipe. If the painting were to be shown, without the sentence putting it into context, you would say “Oh, it’s a pipe.” Well it’s not. It’s a painting representing a pipe.
Or rather, an image of a painting of a pipe.
Or rather, a series of tiny pixels arranged to represent the pattern of an image of a painting of a pipe.
