DnD sketch dump

Some works I did in the recent months with my druid, Abrax, and one of the party mates - dragonborn sorcerer, Nordfall, and his charming familiar.

Abrax plays on his decorated duduk flute, bringing dreamy melodies that carry the memory and charm of his home in Feywild which he had to leave to adventure. (You can listen to a sound of it here).

With him is his fey ferret buddy, Nosh, his little partner in mischief and loyal companion.

Last but not least, is our party's ever handsome pragmatic sorcerer, Nordfall whose profession is that of an investigator in The Guiding Star bureau. He recently acquired a familiar, dragonling named Lysa, which he found after having an emotional dream about his parents. On that occasion, I got in touch with Nordfall's player and we both did some experimentation to finalize the look for both him and Lysa <3

Abrax is my leonin druid character in a dnd 5e campaign. Getting to play this druid guy is a blessing and I am so grateful that my friend group adores and treats him well too. I wanted to portray his vibe well in a single drawing and I think I managed to do it pretty well!

Reference sheet of my raccoon fursona - Monty

So very proud of how it came out, despite of how much time it took! Hopefully I’ll learn how to draw faster the more I put these challenges for myself.

I have wanted to redesign him for so long and ngl it’s very satisfying to have it on canvas now, haha. There are several… actually, plenty of characters I have in mind that I are in the queue to finally get their own reference sheet and gradually everyone will get to see the light of day sometime, but for the foreseeable future I will be working on a portfolio and not all of the artworks will be posted, but I will try to keep the content coming. Big thanks for everyone who still watches my blog <3

WIP of Monty’s final reference sheet

Alright, this has been taking plenty of patience and persistency for the past month and the hardest part is done at last (hope I’m not jinxing it). I would normally do a lineart of this all, but that would take an extra month, haha, so I am leaving it as a polished sketch. Now to color this, add some info for formatting and the reft is done.

There are some additional things that I would like to illustrate for this, like how his paw pads look, his mouth and maybe facial expressions, but I will make a secondary sheet for the rest. This list will probably stay like this.

Fur colors and pattern designs for Monty #2

Second batch of Monty's design variants! It's been a ton of trials and errors. A lot was learned and applied. There was a lot of details that I semi-unconsciously was trying to keep, while trying to build stuff around them, e.g. I wanted to the mane to stay the darkest part, as well as make palms and soles bright.

I didn’t make all of these at first try, there was A LOT of tries that were scrapped and started from nothing. I was figuring out a lot of designing and happy to say that I'm sticking with the one on the right! Feels good to know that I finally gave him a look that I am content with from head to toes. I might do minor adjustments here and there, like a color brightness or tint if something comes to mind, but the pattern design will most probably stay. So yeah,

Next step is a full reference sheet 🦝✨

Fur colors and pattern designs for Monty

Some experimenting on the colours and fur design! I would say these are the first attempts, because I would like to explore more. Expanding your mental library of character design elements is a fun and necessary activity and I gotta do it more, haha. 

I will work more and might do some mixing between these, because I’m happy with all of them.

All variants for Monty’s mane styles

Alright, so this all of the variants, plus a new (3rd) page of mane styles. I took the ones that appealed to me the most from the previous two pages and simplified them a tad. Decided to stick with the left one on the last page!

This was a long road and a lot of creative effort. It could be my indecisiveness or a lack of something that I wasn’t seeing in the previous variants, but honestly, time will tell. If I suddenly have an epiphany and come up with a mane style that make me go “THIS IS IT”, I will draw it out and make it an attachment to the reference sheet.

Will be moving on and work on the fur patterns next!

Another 3 hair/mane style variants for Monty

Another page of 3 more variants! This is the last one, because I need to move on with this. I didn’t have an intention of making it too exotic/complex, but there are some ideas which seemed appealing in the process of trying it all out.

What I am trying to achieve is a design that reflects a serene, caring personality, so his mane is supposed to be fluffy and flowy. Braids and pony tails are good elements that give off that impression, but it can get too stuffy, even if it looks good, so for the last variant I made a completely clean mane, because why not.

Will give it a proper thought and pick one for the main look among all of the variants. 🦝✨

Monty the raccoon hair and mane variants

Filled a page with some variants for Monty's hair and mane style. Haven't chosen one as the primary one yet, but was fun playing around. 

I enjoy the idea of him having braids, but they blend in the mane, while the buns on the middle variant add to the silhouette and this is what I like about it. Might brainstorm it more later. What do you think?

Working on a spreadsheet for Monty. Exploring possible styles for his hair and mane. Drawing inspiration from some mmos, where characters have manes, but trying not to make it too exotic, haha. 

This is just one turnaround of several variants which are still in progress. Gotta make ma boy handsome🌟

Fury the wanderer for @steshsarts​ (@lStesh on Twitter)

I’ve started working on this piece with an idea of a glorious show of power for this character - Fury. There is so much to unpack in this long term project. 

I was improvising with the design for the character, since Fury’s real design is work in progress of @steshsarts​ and I wanted to make him this big surprise. I was hoping that my take on Fury will retain the spirit of the character and that it will possibly give Stesh inspiration for creating more of his wonderful characters. (you should go and see his work)

It’s first time in a long while when I painted the background and did it multiple times, until I understood what I was doing, even if it is just dense clouds. The cogs on the other hand were a challenge. I’ve tried many techniques that were new to me. I initially planned only two big cogs behind him, but then understood there must be more, which also meant more work, more designing and more use perspective, but I’m very happy to say it was all worth it.

A Secret Christmas gift for @Chimkenpie on Twitter!

Drawing someone this beefy is quite pleasant actually. Helps you figure out how much of the body muscles you know and makes you figure out how to render them beautifully. The owner of the character was very happy about it and that made me happy! Wishing them very happy holidays!
