Ik im speaking to the “booo gen AI” website. But I need to rant.

There’s so many free models. You can pull up CharGPT and ask a question or give it a “simple” task and it will do it. All for free!

The more complex models? Go to a hackathon, a conference, talk to someone, and you can get free tokens! Use the big models for free for a bit!

They are selling you a product! They want you hooked on a product! Giving free samples is business (and drug dealing) 101.

Models are free. For now. After they get a good chunk of the population to offload their critical thinking and writing skills to their models, do you think it will stay that way? For how long? If they start requiring subscriptions, how small of a monthly fee do you think it will be? How long until that fee gets raised?

Sam Altman (CEO of OpenAI) had already said that he envisions a future where intelligence (tokens to access a model) is a Utility like water, electricity, WiFi. If that’s the goal, what’s the best way to maximize your amount of customers? Make people reliant on it. Make people incapable of envisioning a life where they can go without it.

100% correct but I also have my own two cents to add. If you're in comp-sci or software engineering or any field related to code, *please* don't use AI to build your projects. Not *just* because you'll lose your critical thinking and basic coding skills like OP said, but also because you'll turn your code into a black box. You may think you're above AI addiction or that it doesn't affect your thinking and that's fine, but if you make Claude or Gemini or whatever else build your entire codebase, you will *need* to use it again to update it every single time. And soon these tools won't be free anymore, and suddenly the project *you*, in theory, own, will require a 20, 40, 200$ subscription in order to edit. Just don't do it, guys

If I just want a quick overview from a new subject, or to remember one specific thing from one I already know, Wikipedia is my go-to. But if I want/need anything actually serious, I go with textbooks and video lectures on youtube

Days Off and Topology

Learning math as an Engineering student is very weird, especially as a control engineer, which is a very very math-intensive field. While trying to teach myself topology I find myself retreading ground I had no idea was even *part* of the subject. I had never formally studied metric spaces, and yet I learned how to use different functions for vector and matrix norms in order to prove the convergence of different iterative methods. It's a weird feeling, on one hand it's a relief I know more than I thought I did, but on the other, now I have no idea which subjects I do know and which I don't lol. I still have some good years left in me, and I plan on using them to learn as much as I can from many beautiful fields, I just hope my endeavors find themselves fruitful in the end
