Some of you probably know me as DR, empathetic, or Succ, I mostly just like and sometimes reblog stuff. [often pertaining to DC/Cass Cain or occasionally something in another fandom, lol]
Cassandra Cain/the Batgirls obviously, but DC in general my favorite topics revolve around Cass and the other Batgirls and then Tara Markov/Terra because I just think she's neat lmao.
But I'll reblog and talk about other stuff like I just enjoy DC Comics as is.
TRON oddly enough but I like it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
And then BioShock and any other video game I like but BioShock is definitely my favorite game series lmao.
Also Ghost in the Shell/anything cyberpunk-related which I'm also into.
I have a lot of other interests but these are the main 4, so ye. ^_^
Something I appreciate is that Brombal and Segovia didn't flanderize David Cain in the slightest, that mf gave Cass ice cream and that can only come from a dude who genuinely does love her despite how fucked in the head he is.
like, REALLY GOOD! I have very low expectations for this series and brombal’s writing sadly, but this exceeding them by far! It was a fun and interesting read, characterization was on point, had some themes I REALLY really adore, pacing was way better than usual, it was just GOOD!
First off: plot. LOVED IT. Really felt like a real noir comic, something I love to see Cass in! The mystery is interesting and intriguing. I’m excited to see who this Forget-Me-Not guy is and how the seizures work. Obviously some kind of hypnosis.
Next: cameos. BRUCE! I really liked how Brombal did their relationship! I’d be excited to see a little more comparing along with the contrasting re: Bruce and Cain, but there was still enough to keep me happy. Speaking of: Cain! Loveeeee to see some Cass backstory in the big 26. I also really liked that Cass has this new supporting cast that even stay with her in Gotham! Jaya was gorgeous, has so so much potential, beautiful design and costume. Tengi is adorable and has a great design and I am truly trying so hard to like him but. Ough man.
Apart from the rest of his character, he’s acting as comic relief this issue, which is unneeded and rather annoying. I promise I want to like him he just needs to be out of Brombal’s hands 🙏
Now: themes. YES!!! YAY!!!! YES!!!!!!! YES! Representation of memory issues are so important to me (even as fantasy/magic) as someone who has them, especially in my all time favorite character!—plus, it’s just so fascinating and heart-wrenching and juicy in general! I love this! I am SO excited to see these memory issues terrify Cass’ idea that she’s perfect and capable, and her being terrified that she might have killed more people without knowing, and her losing trust in herself and acting irrationally and damaging relationships—SO GOOD! Also: the seizures! Reinforces that theme of disability, which I’m not expecting too much out of canon on, but am excited for fanworks inspired by it. Again makes her battle with her idea of perfection, especially if it becomes an ongoing thing.
And characterization! GREAT! As much as I’m not a fan of so many of Brombal’s choices, he really does know Cass. Her internal (and external, at that) dialogue is spot-on. I love detective Cass!! She’s smart and capable mentally! I think he nailed her relationship with Bruce. Her relationship with David was featured shortly, but good enough.
The art was beautiful! I’m glad this artist gets to feature again. Usually Brombal has difficulty with pacing but I thought this was very good.
Overall: REALLY GOOD AND ENJOYABLE! Exceeded my expectations for this run by a lot. I love Cass!! I’m excited for this series and so happy she’s in Gotham!
Finished rereading Batgirl 2000, have to experience the sudden explosive end of Bludhaven again. (Had to wiki what happened because I don't keep track of all comics.) Such a missed opportunity to explore and develop Cass's reaction and emotions to the lost of her friends and new home city.
Ended up reading on AO3, found a story (that doesn't twist the canon) I like, and head-canon it as a fitting conclusion to Cass's story in Bludhaven.
Google tells me that Deathstroke caused the explosion. I know Deathstroke drugged Cass in Titans East. But there's no connecting story linking them? I wish there's more to explore how the lost of the city, the effect of the Lazarus Pit can tie in with how she got drugged.
With the success of finding a new head-canon to end Cass's Bludhaven story via fanfiction. Is there a good fanfiction that better explains how Cass got screwed up by Deathstroke?
"Cassandra Cain is Batman's favorite because she's the best fighter" Incorrect. Sure it's nice that he doesn't need to worry about her getting hurt, but that's not it.
"Cassandra Cain is Batman's favorite because she's the most dedicated to his mission" ALSO incorrect. "Dedication to the Mission" is a tricky thing to measure, she's probably the most dedicated to never killing someone, but most of the various Bats manage to not kill people without her level of dedication to not doing so. But even if she was, that wouldn't make her his favorite.
"Cassandra Cain is Batman's favorite because her borderline mind-reading powers means he doesn't need to talk to her" Correct. This man would communicate entierly via grunts and silent stares if he could. Half of his "Other heroes stay out of gotham" Schtick is just to minimize the degree to which he needs to spend time talking to said other heroes. A sidekick who can understand what he means with a minimal number of actual human words exchanged is the dream.
Even though the boycott is over I wanted to highlight Green Lantern Corps by Morgan Hampton because it's really good and my favorite comic at DC by a black creative currently.
It's both a spiritual successor to GL: TAS and has some great John Stewart moments.
I really wish people would give it a read! Especially considering it features Aya, who is one of my all-all-time favorite DC characters.
