       a soft hum left them as a young dragon flew over to the pain on unsteady wings. a smile spread across gavrus’ face, hand lifting to scratch lightly under the little dragon’s head. the creature chattered happily in their ear, before flying off again. their head tilted to the side as they looked off into the wooded distance. “of course. this place is easy to get lost in,” they answered with a smile. their hand lifted to where the young dragon had landed. “he says there is a mother and her young one off in the woods a ways. Charlie is with them. he’s been helping the mother since the little one was born.”

     they’d inhabited this island long before the humans came with their genetic experiments, their strange versions of the dragon’s ancestors. it was a strange sense of kinship that kept gavrus around. they would hunt with and for these strange creatures, creating a bond of sorts between them. the dragon had gotten very good at hiding from the humans on the island, aware of the rumors spreading among them of a strange creature, a winged dinosaur that no one had records of creating. gavrus could care less what they thought. no human could care for their kin the way they could.

     except for one human. a man, though the dragon wasn’t sure of his name. they’d seen him with the raptors, seen how much the mortal cared for them. it was almost as if they were his children. the dragon tended to feed the dinosaurs at night. it was the easiest way to avoid the other mortals, but the man who kept the raptors had caught their interest, so they’d made sure he was around when they next fed the beasts.
