Sleep did not make him feel better. Or rather, things didn't improve after a night of restless, fitful, occasional sleep.
Shouta found himself unable to fall asleep until late and waking every few hours after that, gasping for air after a nightmare that clung to the dark places in his mind or for seemingly no reason at all except to compulsively check his phone. Only the picture Kayama had promised and sent -- Sushi, old and basking in the late afternoon sunlight with the ease Shouta envied cats for -- soothed him. Even then, it was only a temporary comfort.
The memories alone had him closing the picture a little too quickly -- the echoes of dust tickling his nose, a cold, sinking weight of dread and panic settling in his stomach, and tears pricking behind his eyes. Usually, it didn't weigh so heavily on him, but between the nightmares and uncertainties...
