By character development people are not saying that Aang had to change, on the contrary! Aang didn’t get the chance to SOLIDIFY who he is. To become more of himself. To get to the roots of why he believes what he does beyond “because my family told me.”

That’s what you do when you grow up. We all go through an identity crisis where we find the arguments behind WHY we believe what we believe based on our experience. We needed more scenes of Aang finding the why behind his beliefs. As well as Aang fully embracing being the Avatar, as that is a big part of his identity. Aang finding a balance and a compromise between his identities is a great conflict: man v self.

No one in real life gets handed the answers, so when a character gets handed the answers versus struggling through something very human, it is no longer compelling. We don’t learn anything about ourselves through his final conflict because he doesn’t realistically echo human struggle in his final conflict.

Even gods and superheros in media struggle with very human things, because those things are what humans have tried to figure out for as long as we have been on earth and they make some damn good stories. Aang was robbed of a damn good story and he deserved better.

Bryke do not understand their own inspirations.

Bryan stated, “I agree with him wholeheartedly,” in reference to a quote from Hayao Miyazaki: “I’ve become skeptical of the unwritten rule that just because a boy and girl appear in the same feature, a romance must ensue. Rather, I want to portray a slightly different relationship, one where the two mutually inspire each other to live. If I’m able to, then perhaps I’ll be closer to portraying a true expression of love.”

Yet Bryan fails to realize that Zuko and Katara resemble the kind of relationship Miyazaki is describing.

Bryan himself said, “Zuko and Katara might have shared some sparks, but sometimes there are people along your ‘journey of love’ who are there to teach you about yourself and what you really need, but don’t necessarily end up being your partner.”

He also said, “Not to say that Zuko didn’t mean something to her, and vice versa. They learned a lot from each other. Much like in life, you have relationships with different people, and they teach you different things. Just because you’re not going to spend your whole life with someone doesn’t mean you didn’t grow with them or learn from them as a lover.”

Mako and Korra do not fit Miyazaki's quote because they were actually in a romantic relationship and only broke up because it became a plot tumor that audiences hated. However, Bryke pretend that the romance was intentionally made bad because they were supposedly aiming to subvert clichés all along by having them not end up together. What a load of bullshit.

ATLA had a Miyazaki-esque couple in Zuko and Katara the entire time, but the creators were too dense to connect the dots, and they misrepresented what Miyazaki said to justify their horrible romance writing in TLOK.

When we Zutara fans say that we wished Zuko and Katara should have ended up together, people just immediately think that we want them together right at the end of the original series. This is not what we, or at least a lot of us mean. First of all, in all honesty, them getting together at the end of the show would be way too rushed, given how canonically they don't even potentially view each other romantically, and their friendship was still yet to grow. Second of all, most Zutara fans, including me, envision the two ending up together as adults instead, where their friendship would've developed more, which will eventually lead to romantic interest (or at least that's what I think). Either way, each one of us see them ending up together in different scenarios but I believe that this is what most of us see it as

This comic is quite concerning to me.

It's framed as romantic. Aangsty.

I think it's anything but that.

Aang tries to pry an answer out of Katara about their kiss before the invasion. She avoids the topic, as she has done so before. Aang’s frustration produces a dangerous lava blast. Katara has to hide behind a pillar to avoid getting singed. Its dangerous. Its reckless. But Katara immediately redirects sympathy toward his fear of him being the one harmed.

Once again, it's Katara - despite nearly getting walloped - that reassures him. That she's 'fine'; even praising him. Her fright and the recklessness of what he did are barely acknowledged.

Now it's worth noting Aang doesn't deliberately try and hurt Katara, but its absolutely a point-blank showcase of Aang losing control and endangering Katara because he cannot consider her romantic boundaries.

Does he apologise? Yes. But in the end his actions are still framed as 'valid.'

That to me, is a little bit toxic. And what's more is that we see glimpses of this in the Atla movie - this is something that Aang has never grown from. Concerning.
