Reading owedbetter's "I'm Still Here" was my very first ZK fanfic experience ever, and seeing @hayleynwong's art totally sucked me into this creative writing trap. I told myself I’d focus more on the parallels and the duality between the two universes + the Gaang dynamics, rather than leaning too hard into the myths and world-building. But my imagination got carried away, and now I have to come up with a genuinely compelling reason for why the Jinn did it (and all the etc. that comes with it) 😅

I couldn't figure out how to reply to just your comment on the Zutara poetry post because I'm too old for the internet but..
Imagine Zuko writing poetey in secret that he either has to hide or burn to keep secret from Ozai or Azula.
He only feels comfortable later, after the dragons, with showing that side of himself to the gaang. Able to finally express his love of language and his full emotional spectrum.
Later, his collected works are studied by historians to provide insight into the heart and soul of one of the most complex historical figures of all time.
And hey, he sketches too! Battleplans in the beginning..
And then faces..
A lot of faces… not really perfect. Just unfinished silhouettes.
He’d read his poems to his children at bed time (like a Shakespeare sonnet but in atla universe)
And his children would fall asleep in that low gravely voice.

After years of saying I wanted to draw Zutara, I finished this artpiece! I really was not satisfied with so many things and the lack of times with work and my studies didn't let me end this sooner. It's ok, tho. I wanted to complete this as my own challenge. Hope you like it!
I collected some WIP screenshots I was sharing with my friends in these years so you can see a small art process.
Zutara discourse is so funny to me because. ATLA has other hundreds of problems and outdated ideas that are brushed off in canon. From the neolib politics to the shangri-la steryotype with the air nomades and the casual misogyny in katara's arc, but somehow the not canon not real very much a concept ship is what gets people so heated up. Idk man is too mean to say that those people should get a life??
Confronting the actual problems the show has would conflict with the extremely rose-tinted view many fans have of the original show. So, focusing their energy on a non-canon ship (that, by nature, tends to be linked to criticism of the show,) is more comforting and lets them enjoy the nostalgia guilt-free.
These days, people are very defensive of stories that connect them to a happier, more uncritical time, and when you factor in the way that people intertwine their identities with these types of nostalgic media, you get a recipe for vitriol. The politics of ATLA are worthy of critique, and to avoid this uncomfortable truth, people become overly generous in their interpretations of the show’s politics and themes, and treating the white writers as if they were the second coming of Edward Said. I don’t want to stifle textual analysis, but at a certain point, fans need to accept that ATLA has not aged perfectly and that people are allowed to point that out.
There’s also the precedent of misogyny set by Bryke, and the inclination of fans towards uncritically accepting everything the creators say to maintain their idealized vision of their beloved childhood cartoon.
