He wanted nothing more than to leave; to inform the Spinner that he was hanging up his hat and leave without another word- oh, he could relay the news to his caretaker- Belle, if he recalled correctly- and be on his way. But he did, contrary to popular belief, strive to be a gentleman on occasion.
Besides, one should never turn down a cup of tea, lest they have ulterior motives. And, for once, Jefferson had none.
"Well, of course," he replied between a sip of tea, "I wouldnât expect anything else." It was hardly as if anyone would long to come here, much less work in his castle. If it werenât for the handsome payment, Jefferson surely wouldnât be anywhere near the estate.Â
"What I mean to say is, what could you possibly require of him to agree to these terms?â He watched her, oddly intrigued, mind working through many different scenarios that he simply couldnât see being true. âPardon the curiosity.â
Her slight smile still present, Belle gingerly stirred her tea as she remembered the circumstances which had brought her here to the castle in the first place. Make no mistake; though she smiled, it was only for the sake of politeness. She knew full well of the turmoil her father and her province had faced.
"Salvation," she confessed simply. She continued to stir though her tea was certainly lukewarm by now, "The Ogre Wars were raging on in the province my father ruled. So much death; so much despair. I had forgotten what peaceful times had felt like," Belle recalled almost bitterly.
"We had no choice but to summon Rumpelstiltskin and he named my servitude as his price for the offer of his protection," she explained. "I had no choiceâI had to do the brave thing." She stopped stirring and finally took a small sip of her tea, not wanting to relive the panic of the times within the memory.Â
