If you vent to Him about things He told you not to get attached to, He loves you.

If you pray for others first rather than for yourself, He loves you.

If you begged someone to stay for the sake of love but in the end let them go for His sake, He loves you.

If your stubborn heart softens of the thought about Him, He loves you.

“When I first moved to Cairo to study, I began memorizing Surah alMaidah and I realized it was following me everywhere. I would enter a cafe and realize they were playing Surah alMaidah. I would go into the masjid and the Imam would recite from Surah alMaidah. I would enter a taxi and the Qur'an channel was playing Suratul Maidah. 

I was in a foreign country and deeply missed my family. At times I felt overwhelmed and alone. And yet the message I kept receiving from the Qur'an was that as I put in the effort to build my relationship with it, it would be there for me too. In cafes, in taxis, in stores, in the masjid- Surah alMaidah comforted me, enveloped my heart, strengthened me.

Many of you are going through heartache now. Many of you feel alone. And yet, when you’re thrashing in the depths of the ocean, trying to breathe and finding that sometimes it’s easier to give up- I want you to remember my story with Surah alMaidah. When you make the intention that you will seek the Quran, the Quran will be there for you. 

Find a surah you connect with; perhaps it’s a surah you’re memorizing now or maybe the translation of a surah you’re reading in English that’s affecting your heart. 

Dedicate yourself to it. Contemplate it. Focus on it. And pray to God to open your heart to it. (And go to therapy if needed too!) You will find the Quran following you. You’ll enter the masjid and it’s as if God is choosing the moment for you. You’ll listen to the khutbah and the khatib is making tafsir of those verses- just for you. You’ll come to the Qur'an, tears streaming, heart aching and you’ll put your finger on a random verse and it’s as if it was revealed just for *you*

‘Verily in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest!’ (Quran, 13:28)
