Ughm, I don't care what anyone says, SJM didn't plan shit about Mor's revelation, it was VERY OBVIOUSLY AND SLOPPILY tacked in there for "drama" and "oh!plot twist!". I'm currently rereading ACOMAF and I can tell you with 100% certainty she meant for readers to ship Moriel and never, ever alluded to Mor being anything other than straight. She's just a sloppy writer, I guess.
Hello Anon :) Sorry for the delay answering this, I needed to sit on this one for a bit.
Overall, yes, I agree with you. Mor’s arc in ACOWAR doesn’t seem planned AT ALL. And as it’s been already pointed out by a few people - if we assume SJM did plan it that way, it kind of makes it that much worse for me.
[salt intensifies]
I just…hate this, you know? Ever since her first scene in ACOMAF, Mor has quickly become one of my favourite characters and seeing the way her storyline, her agency and sometimes even her characterization was butchered in acowar makes my blood boil. And for what? For faux angst, man pain and drama, just like you said.
And yes, moriel was totally teased in acomaf and acomaf made me trash for them and I AM salty about it too. Some people will say that it was vague and I can agree that this was/is a kind of ship that doesn’t appeal to everybody. Both quiet and intense. But on the narrative level, SJM is actually as subtle as a brick about them? I’m talking about lines like “Az would likely love Mor until he was a whisper of darkness between the stars” and Mor’s “The issue, actually, wouldn’t be me. It’d be him. I could peel off my clothes right in front of himand he wouldn’t move an inch.”
But anyway —
My anger actually goes FAR beyond that? I just hate how her character was treated by the narrative.
And let me be clear, I LOVE the idea of Mor being bisexual. I actually don’t agree with your statement that SJM “never, ever alluded to Mor being anything other than straight”. Maybe that’s because I’m biased on this but I’ve always headcanoned and perceived Mor as bi. But then again, I headcanon that pretty much most of the Inner Circle is bisexual (Mor, Cassian, Azriel and Rhys, TOTALLY).
It’s just…as soon as SJM started writing her sexuality as a plot twist, she stripped Mor of everything else? In ACOMAF, this is Mor:
“A queen—a queen who bowed to no one, a queen who had faced them all down and triumphed. A queen who owned her body, her life, her destiny, and never apologized for it.
And what do we get in acowar? We get Mor who is miserable, who is denied any say in matter of importance to HER (like, idk, co-operating with her abusers), who is denied her righteous rage over decisions OTHERS make for HER. We get Mor who feels so unsafe and is so frightened that she feels the need to sleep with men to “keep her cover” and to spare the feelings of a man (which is…I stopped trying to wrap my head around it because I think Mor wouldn’t need to come out to Azriel to let him know she doesn’t feel that way and maybe it would cause his own feelings of inadequacy to surface, so maybe that’s why she didn’t but I just don’t know, it just doesn’t make sense and it won’t because you’re right, it’s all sloppily written and unplanned).
*takes a deep breath*
In ACOMAF, Mor, at least to me, is the epitome of selflessness, self-love, confidence. She’s a proof that you can go through a nightmare and come out of it scarred but stronger. She’s a proof that you can be kind and selfless AND keep your ground and look out for yourself AT THE SAME TIME.
In acowar…instead of Mor and Nesta bonding over their past, we have them pitted against each other. Instead of Mor guiding Nesta through that difficult time (like she did with Feyre), we have Mor acting…let’s just leave it at OOC.
And last but not least, I just want to add how salty it makes me that as soon as Sarah decided to make Mor gay, she also felt the need to make her miserable. And I think the worst of it is when Mor comes out to Feyre and tells her about Andromache and how she couldn’t keep any steady relationship since then and how she sometimes sleeps with men so that no one finds out and also because it reminds Azriel they won’t be together and then…When Feyre points out that it sounds lonely and sad…Mor says that it’s “good enough”. She tries to convince herself that she’s happy with the way things are and that it’s GOOD ENOUGH? That she should be satisfied with the scraps of happiness she can get???! HOW IS THAT REMOTELY OKAY?
And please not that apart from Mor, we have a High Lord (Thesan) - MALE - who is happily (as far as we can tell) and openly gay and in a relationship. We have another High Lord (Helion) - also MALE - who is openly bisexual and while it’s alluded to that he suffers/suffered because of unrequited love/doomed romance (Lucien’s mother), his sexuality has nothing to do with his possible heartache.
UNLIKE Mor, who, I cannot help but notice, is very much female and the only one out of three who is miserable and it’s directly connected with her sexuality. More, she tells herself that it’s GOOD ENOUGH, that she should take what she can get.
Do I…Do I really need to point out how deeply hurtful this is on so many levels? At least it is to me.
I feel like I’ve got off topic but this has been boiling up in me for quite some time.
IMPORTANT: I’ve seen there’s been a lot of turmoil lately in the fandom about so much negativity and “hate” floating around. I just want to point out that:
1) criticism doesn’t equal hate
“criticism” : the act of criticizing usually unfavorably; a critical observation or remark ; the art of evaluating or analyzing works of art or literature
“to criticize”: to consider the merits and demerits of and judge accordingly
“hate”: : intense hostility and aversion usually deriving from fear, anger, or sense of injury; extreme dislike or disgust
(source: merriam-webster)
2) criticising SJM’s WORK doesn’t equal “hating on her”; it also doesn’t equal insulting her personally
3) she wrote a book for public consumption, it’s a product, I am a consumer and I’m allowed to have opinions about it
4) at the same time - I am NOT trying to shame anyone for what they like and dislike; this is extremely important - this is my blog and I express my personal opinions and sometimes I might be passionate about it but I don’t deal with any universal truths here and it doesn’t make anyone any less of a reader if you don’t agree with me
5) I repeat - I’m not trying to shame anyone for liking acowar or ANY other book, for that matter
6) that being said, if something that I post makes you uncomfortable/angry etc., I tag all my salt under “anti sjm” tag
Hope y’all have a good day.
i dont understand how in ac0maf its a huge theme that ‘theres no such thing as a high lady’ and the night court challenging the idea that women can’t be in positions of power, meanwhile the human queens, the only female characters that have power in their own right, are the biggest fucking bitches because they didnt want to team up with the people who have consistently screwed them over
Unpopular opinion but you want to know what bothers me about ToG? I walked into the series and fell in love with a story about an assassin trying to gain redemption. She was blood thirsty, and morally gray, spoiled and driven. But then S*M got bored with this amazing world and her normal, real, unlikely lovable and human characters, and decided that since it was SELLING she had to keep working on it but changed it into a NEW story with NEW characters that just happen to have the same name and appearance of the ones I actually adore. Post third book is no longer ToG it’s some AU.
SJMess can give Alien fourty five names and eighty seven titles but can’t bother naming two of her main villains.
sj maas: *has nessian almost die together defending one another*
also sj maas: the next logical step is obviously for them to not interact for the rest of the book
How did Az get fucked over with the Moriel thing?
-Because the relationship between them was twisted from ‘mutual interest with issues on both side and Az’s insecurity holding him back from pursuing a relationship with a woman who is ready to be with him but is holding herself back due to respecting him, his experiences and choices’ to ‘creepy, obsessive straight guy can’t take a hint and quietly pines after a queer woman for five hundred years making her actively uncomfortable with his attentions and being a contributing factor in her remaining closeted as well as sleeping with men she may or may not want to to maintain distance between them/. That’s….Fucked up on so many levels I can’t. (And this is not a condemnation of Az’s character - this is a condemnation of Maas’ writing because this should never have been done to him, it disgusts me)
-Because Azriel was set-up to serve as a safe space for Mor in ACOMAF (he watches out for her, he supports her, he protects her, he is the one to go and talk to her and help calm her down when she’s upset and panicky. This is explicitly canon) and in ACOWAR she’s made to be afraid of him/ his outbursts. Cassian is forced between them as a buffer to make her feel safer/to relax afterwards. She sleeps with Helion/other men to remind Azriel she isn’t interested in him/to force distance between them. She is “petrified” of coming out to him. (This is a complaint beyond my Moriel shipping, obviously I shipped them romantically
-Because it’s implied that Eris knows about Mor’s sexuality and wouldn’t have touched her/forced her to be with him…But Azriel is set up as still loving her and lusting after her somehow completely oblivious to her sexuality/lack of interest in him. And I’m supposed to believe this…And be okay with it. That a man who abused her, who left her to die, who terrifies and traumatises her…Has more regard for her choices and feelings than Azriel, who was set up to love her unconditionally, to represent safety and security for her. Like. Sure.
-Because I’m having a harder and harder time accepting the CoN fiasco as being in character for Az. It feels lazy to me. He’s a cookie-cutter copy of Rhys in that scene. I could POTENTIALLY have gone with Azriel not warning Mor about Eris the way Rhys did if it had been for her, if it had been to somehow protect her because she wasn’t supposed to be there/know until later (god fucking knows this thing is impossible to retcon) But I’m having a harder and harder time accepting him not telling her for the same reason as Rhys ‘I don’t trust you, you’re a silly, oversensitive child and I’m afraid you’re going to fuck this up for us’. Not Az, not with Mor, like, sorry. It feels like something to draw lines between them and force them apart/retcon/undo the Moriel set-up she did in ACOMAF to try and make the reveal better.
-Because (this is my personal interpretation/opinion and not one I expect many people to share, and is something I’m having a lot of difficulty putting into words but…) A lot of the Cassian/Mor moments in ACOWAR felt like they should have been Mor/Azriel moments that were dramatically retconned/that Cassian was made far more physically affectionate and closer to Mor than initially appeared in ACOMAF to further force distance between moriel, give Mor some kind of support but strip away any potential Azriel/Mor scenes because of the “”””reveal”””” of her sexuality and Maas’ sudden desire to stop baiting the ship as much. (I loved the Cassian/Mor moments in ACOWAR, I’ve already said this but some of them felt…Like a lot more/altered from their relationship in ACOMAF which I felt demonstrated their unconditional love/support for one another while also maintaining aspects of friction and volatility that they do have. Like I said I’m struggling putting this into words but some parts felt like this was being shoved down my throat just a little too much. might just have been bad writing, might have been forcing Cass as the buffer and forcing Mor and Az further apart. I don’t know)
-Because Moriel could have been a beautiful platonic relationship about the deep, undying unconditional love that these two people have for one another; for the lengths they will go to for one another and the things they would do and sacrifice to keep each other safe….Instead I’ve got a narrative involving a ‘petrified’ closeted queer woman and a man who can’t take a hint and obsessively won’t let her go/stop loving her despite what it does for her and like….I’m sorry but Azriel deserved so much fucking better than that. It’s disgusting. I feel vaguely ill writing all this out.
I was happy with the Az content coming out of ACOWAR (and needing some kind of light in this black pit I probably got blinded by that to begin with) the flying lessons with Feyre were excellent, his moments during battle were beautiful, his rescue of Elain showed the compassion that he has in-line with Cassian.
But I can’t ignore this seriously ugly undercurrent and how it transforms Azriel from a (legitimately) traumatised, insecure abuse victim lacking self worth and self esteem after the horrific abuse he endured as a child…And forces him into the narrative of the entitled straight man whose obsessive love makes a girl feel too afraid to say no to him and like…I’m sorry but in fucking up Moriel with this Dramatic Plot Twist Maas screwed over Mor’s character (infinitely more than Az’s, I’m not arguing that for a second) but it fucks Azriel’s up too. And not because ‘oh no he’s going to be so sad when she comes out to him the poor bat’ but because it turns him into an obsessive creep who, in some ways, is marked out as looking worse than her abuser.
Bottom line is, what Maas did with the Moriel in ACOWAR fucks up Mor’s character, Azriel’s character, and the entire dynamic of the Inner Circle. I genuinely cannot believe how poorly this ‘twist’ was thought out. I feel gross now. I’m going to take a shower.

I have been searching and searching for Elorcan art, and and God damn I AM GLAD I DID
I LOVE THEM
Lorcan made a mistake by calling for Maeve to help them, yes I know. But when he did call for Maeve, he had no space in his mind for other thoughts, he was so terrified for Elide, that he didn’t think things through logically. So the first thought that wouldn’t hit him would of been to call upon the person he loves and trusts, he knew Maeve would help him get Elide safely, and he didn’t think about the consequences about what he was doing. SO CAN WE JUST LOVE LORCAN PLEASE
I’m re-reading ACOMAF and I just got to the bit where Rhys comes to get Feyre for her week in the Night Court (for the second time)- and I don’t know why but I always think about how hard that must be for Rhys…
He turns up to get her, and she walks out of the room in a blanket, with nothing on underneath, and its clear that her and Tamlin had slept together the night before, and for Rhys that must be heartbreaking. He knows that Feyre is his mate and he’s just witnessed her walk out of a room practically naked, probably with Tamlin’s scent all over her- and yet he stands there acting like it’s nothing.
I mean, there is a bit where we see he is a but taken aback by her walking out the way she did- “Upon hearing the door open, Rhys turned toward me. The grin that had been on his face faltered.”
I don’t know why this scene always gets me, but maybe it just reminds me how selfless Rhys actually is- whilst he is taking her to the Night Court despite Feyre not wanting to go-, he is respectful of her relationship with Tamlin, and accepts that she loves him.
Rhys for months watches his mate, the woman he is in love with, be in love with another male, and Rhys just accepts it. He rarely says things to Feyre that could convince her to leave Tamlin, or make him look bad. And it just makes me love Rhys more.
Imagine when chaol finally comes back from the southern continent
Chaol: who's that guy with the army?
Aedion: the Prince of Wendyln
Chaol: okay... what about that girl with the red hair?
Rowan: queen of the wastes
Chaol: ... is that a witch coven?
Dorian: yes
Chaol: and an army of silent assassins??
Lysandra: yep
Chaol: Nevermind, where's Aelin? I'm sure she can explain
Gavriel and Lorcan: ...
what she says: im fine
what she means: rhysand kept his and feyres mating bond a secret because he wanted her to choose her own path. he was willing to sacrifice his own happiness for eternity just so she could be her own person and be with whoever she wanted. he loves her so much and after all of that there are still people rooting for fucking tamlin
