Salt & Straw, Portland, OR
I canât come to Portland and not hit Salt & Straw for their amazing ice creamâŠ
Yesterdayâs flavorsâŠ
I love that S&S haspartnered with Vernon Elementary School and allowed the kids to suggest flavors, with all profits going back to the schoolâŠ
Bean & Cheese Burrito intrigued us, so we had to sample it. Turns out itâs actually red beans and cream cheeseâŠ
Complement Crunch was clearly a flavor created, by a kid, chocolate ice cream with all kinds of sweet things mixed in, like rice krispie treats, but Tropical Swirl had fresh kiwi and pineapple!
In the end, I went with a half-scoop of Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons topped with a half-scoop of Cinnamon SnickerdoodleâŠ

Mittens with the sleeper hold!
If you are naturally an excellent squatter, congratulations, I envy you. However, if you struggle markedly with your squat form, it may not be your fault. You may be hampered by an unfavorable skeleton. Youâll just have to work extra hard on your squat form, and youâll likely find that you can better display your strength on hip thrusts, leg presses, lunges, sled pushes, and back extensions. Donât sweat it.
Really great article on how your anthropometry (limb/trunk proportions) influence your squats and, in turn, your perceived âmobility.â
Itâs the end of the day, youâve worked hard, and now youâre home and itâs time to relax. So you open up your laptop and settle in to transcribe some bee...
We had the chance to talk with Andy Wright of @atlasobscura about our amazing #volunpeers and the @smithsonian collections that they are helping to make more accessible every day.Â
In addition to showcasing the tiny mysteries and adventures on each page, the article highlights the fascinating connections that emerge across projects and subjects through transcription. Projects featured include materials from the Department of Botany, @archivesofamericanart, @nmaahc, Smithsonian Institution Archives, and Anacostia Community Museum Archives.Â
But wait! Thereâs more! Andy also shared projects from our friends at @NYPL (Whatâs on the Menu?), DIYHistory from University of Iowa Libraries (please share with colleagues, @uispeccoll!), Atlas of Living Australiaâs DigiVol, as well as our near-by neighbors @usnatarchives and the Citizen Archivist platform (please also share @todaysdocument!).
If you want to help, we have ever-expanding opportunities with new projects launched each week from archives, museums, and libraries across the Smithsonian. Weâd love to see you join us or other crowdsourcing projects. You can make a difference to historical, cultural, and scientific research. Let us know how we can help you get started by using the feedback button or emailing ([email protected]) - or asking here or tweeting (@transcribesi).
And some citations JIC youâd like to research materials the images in the article:Â

Itâs always worth stopping by DIY History, if youâve finished with the others :)

Gammeeok, NYC
More good news out of Koreantown last night⊠Gammeeok is back as well!
The popular 24-hour Korean bistro/pub has relocated and reopened further down 32nd St., right off Fifth Ave, now on the second floor above Five SensesâŠ
This bright, new modern space has two dining rooms with a bar inbetween, and the kitchen keeps sending out Korean classics around the clockâŠ
Their happy hours are back and in full-swing as well, with fantastic food and drink deals from 3-6pm, and again from 9pm to 4amâŠ
Amidst the bottles of Kloud beer and Fresh soju, hereâs a look at what we ate, starting with a pot of cut-your-own kimchiâŠ
Jokbal pigâs trottersâŠ
The salty dried shrimp sauce that accompanied the jokbal was amazingâŠ
Pork belly fried in gochujangâŠ
Deep-fried chicken wingsâŠ
I was expecting a little spice, but these were actually sweetâŠ
Seared beef brisket with shredded scallionâŠ
Seafood pajeon pancakeâŠ
Oxtail soup and yukgaejang, a spicy beef soup/stewâŠ
They also have an art installation, in the form of message wall, where they provide diners with Sharpies so you can draw pictures or write messages after you eat. They just opened but itâs filling up fastâŠ
Gammeeok is the perfect place to go to fill your belly with a wonderful Korean feast, and also get pretty liquored up, all at very reasonable prices!

Little Bao, Hong Kong
If you watched my â24 Hours in Hong Kongâ video on Huffington Post, you know I fell head-over-heels in love with Chef May Chowâs Little Bao!
A small American-style diner thatâs mashing up classic comfort foods with Chinese influences and accents, everything at Little Bao is made-to-order right before your eyes in their open kitchenâŠ
Here I want to give you a better look at some of the amazing eats you saw a glimpse of in the video, starting with the luscious Lamb Tartare, made with Iberico lamb, fermented bean curd mayo and takana and tofu chipsâŠ
Their Sesame Caesar with Indian lettuce, fried dace, black bean and pankoâŠ
Brussels Sprouts with fish sauce caramel, chillis, peanuts, lime and fried shallotsâŠ
Their Thick-Cut BaconâŠ
Prepared Lap-cheong style, tea-smoked, with cabbage and picklesâŠ
Little Bao signature Szechuan Fried Chicken baoâŠ
Made with local âthree-pocket chickenâ, on a butter-grilled bao, with Chinese black vinegar glaze, Szechuan mayo and homemade coleslaw, it was one of the juiciest piece of fried chicken I have ever eatenâŠ
And if one chicken dish wasnât enough, we also got the batter-crusted Hot Chicken made with Szechuan spice and served with prawn chips. Watch your back, NashvilleâŠ
And the most eye-opening dish for me, Chef Mayâs magical âMac & CheeseââŠ
Steamed rice rolls baked in a mentaiko cheese sauce! So so so good!!!
I also highly recommend the Yuzu Leaf, a cocktail made with Jim Beam, yuzu, maple syrup and sea saltâŠ
If youâre ever in Hong Kong, do yourself a favor and make a beeline to see Chef May at Little BaoâŠ
âFusionâ is such a overused word these days, and doesnât properly describe what theyâve created here at Little Bao. âIngeniousâ seems more fitting.

Missing Cat Surprised His Family After He was Found Bigger, Fluffier in a Pet Food Factory
A clever cat who disappeared from his home over a year ago, was found bigger, fluffier and happy in a pet food factory. This two-year-old Norwegian Forest Cat named Clive went missing in December 2014. His family was devastated and put up flyers around the neighborhood and posts on social media, hoping to find their cat, but he didnât turn up. They lost hope until last Wednesday when the family received a call about their cat who was found snoozing in a pet food warehouse just two miles from their home. When the Kennelgate Pet Superstores got alarm calls from the warehouse at night because something kept setting them off, they went on an investigation and found the cat who had been living large, having free meals in the warehouse. After they got the kitty, they sent him to the vet where they found a microchip. When Tanya Irons met her cat after 14 months, Clive had doubled his original size and was fluffier than ever. He seemed well looked after or maybe Clive had been feeding himself quite nicely at a place where cat food was ubiquitous. They were surprised to see how much bigger he had grown and were thrilled to have him back to the family. Before he disappeared, Clive was very close to his feline brothers. After 14 months, they are back together.

What macro calculator do you recommend best? How do you calculate your macros?
I actually like the formula Krissy Mae Cagney uses in her book. You basically take your weight and multiply it by a factor of 10-16 depending on how physically active you are. People on the upper end of the spectrum are individuals who train multiple sessions per day, while those at the other end are sedentary.
For protein, you want approximately bodyweight in grams.
Amount of fat is more or less how many kilograms you weigh.
Carbohydrates make up the remaining calories.
This is a very basic formula, but Iâve found it to work well for me!

Exactly.Â
Imagine a wall full of circular holes, that circles can keep walking in and out of with no difficulty.
Now imagine that the triangles manage to get the resources together, after years of not being able to fit through the circleâs holes, to drill a single triangle space into the wall.
Now imagine that the circle â who previously supported the triangleâs efforts because they are well-rounded (har) and value equality â Â comes along and sees the construction project. But instead of being happy, they get angry.
âWell, I wonât be able to fit through your hole!!!!â the circle cries.
âI helped you get the drill!!!!â the circle shrieks.
âMake it fit me too!!!!â the circle demands.
The triangles, barely holding it together enough to get a triangle hole together, stare at the circle in confusion.Â
âYou have all the holes you need,â the triangles explain. âThis is for us. You donât need to fit through our hole, too.â
âYOUâRE BEING UNEQUAL AND HURTING MY FEELINGS!â the circle wails. âI DONâT SUPPORT YOUR HOLE IF IT DOESNâT FIT ME TOO. GIVE ME MY DRILL BACK.âÂ
âItâs not your drill, itâs our drill. You helped us get it, because you said you cared.â
âI ONLY CARED WHEN I THOUGHT YOUâD MAKE A HOLE EVERYONE COULD FIT THROUGH. YOUâRE PERPETUATING INEQUALITY!!!â
âWhy is it up to us, the small group that has never been able to fit through the wall at all, to make a hole everyone can use? Why isnât it up to you, the people who have been able to cross back and forth at will for years? We just want to see the other side; why are you yelling at us?â
âI DIDNâT ASK TO BE BORN A CIRCLE, OMG. IâVE HAD TO WORK HARD ALL MY LIFE TOO. YOUâRE JUST BEING BIGOTED AGAINST ME BECAUSE OF SOMETHING I CANâT CONTROL, JUST LIKE EVERYONE IS AGAINST YOU.â
âYou are interfering with our project and asking us to comfort you while weâre trying to make progress. Please leave.â
âIâm going to tell everyone about this,â the circle warns. âNobody will support you now.â
âApparently nobody ever did,â the triangles sigh, getting back to work.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Everyone loves a good fried chicken sandwich, and thereâs an abundance of them in NYC now. From Fuku to Shake Shack to Chik-Fil-A, so many amazing options have opened up for New Yorkers in the last six months. However, when Gotham West Market opened in early 2014, the Buttermilk Battered Fried Chicken Sandwich at Genuine Roadside had a brief moment in the spotlight. It was soon overshadowed by the buzz surrounding Ivan Ramen, Cannibal and some of the other fantastic shops in the market, however. But while many of the original shops in Gotham West are now gone, Genuine is still there, packing people in with their delicious chicken sandwiches, topped with apple & celeriac slaw and sambal mayo on a Martinâs potato roll. Just as good as the day they opened!
