Late Kamakura Shogunate period.

Samurai became a properly established social class during the Kamakura period and throughout the Edo period. Bushido ("the way of the warrior") became much more important for samurai during the Edo period, an era of peace after the Kamakura Shogunate. Samurai defined themselves by their mastery of combat, so what are samurai when there is no war? Bushido was developed as a way for samurai to distinguish themselves from "ordinary people" by becoming skilled at the arts and flattery, which could be focused on when they weren't fighting.

In the context of hermitcraft, the server is just chaotic enough for me to say that Wels is not "at peace". But he is also not "at war". Since both the Kamakura Shogunate and the Edo period count as "feudal Japan", why not have him experience both? Also, Wels' main "palace-esque" build with a wall and whatnot seems to be taken out of the Kamakura period imo.

Do-maru style armor

I had to choose between the o-yoroi and the do-maru. The o-yoroi also had the iconic gold headpiece, but it's described as being more bulky and later fallen out of fashion. The o-yoroi was also most used when samurai focused on horseback combat, but Wels hasn't used horses this season as far as I remember.

The do-maru had more skirt plates, was more malleable/a better fit for the particular samurai's body, was lighter to wear due to its greater use of leather (instead of iron), and was cheaper to create (and fix).

The do-maru, then, fits the time period that I imagine Wels in, plus its combination of iron and leather makes it convenient for a guy who's primarily building and traveling across the server.
