Proud Coach Moment watching the first athlete I ever coached graduate Salutatorian of his class! 4 years ago on the first day of school for freshmen, I was out searching for athletes for cross country! Asking all the kids "Are you doing any fall sports?" When I ran into Joe he said "Im playing Football but I try cross country too!" I knew at the moment I had a special athlete. Over the past 4 years we've a lot of obstacles to overcome but we fought through them! 5am practices, not having enough athletes to field a team, crazy weather and not a lot of support from the school and even a assault while practicing. Everytime Joe laced up his shoes he was literally risking his life! His body would have a allergic reaction to his sweat and cause him to break out in hives and trouble breathing but he never gave up! It didn't matter what event 400,800,1600,3200 or even hurdles he would do it! Its been a tremendous four years watching this young man grow up! I wish every athlete had has much heart and dedication as Joe! He wasn't just running for himself, he was running for the team! He wanted the other teams to know, watch out for the Bearcat distance team! Unlike a lot of sports distance running isnt about the talented, its about who has the most guts, heart and determination! After four years of hard work Joe had racked up over 70 scholarship opportunities from schools across the country! Im proud he chose York College, I can't wait to see that first college meet! 5 years ago I worked at a place called Assurant met a lot of great people there! One of the friends I made out there was Marisol! She always had kind and encouraging words to say. A year later at one of our track meets, I run into her there and I find out her son is one of the athletes on our track team, Its such a small world! Watching Dwayne grow over the past 4 years as been amazing! He worked hard in the classroom and on the field! His spirit lights up the room, he was a gentle giant of the team, always motivating and encouraging the athletes around him! I didn't get to coach Dwayne as much because he was a thrower but I did get him to run a lap around the track a couple times!
