okay but fun fact, cattails are, in fact, edible. The flowers aren't edible when they're ripe, but the young flowers can be boiled, covered in butter and eaten like corn on the cob. The pollen from male flowers can also be put in pancakes or in bread as well, and the stems and leaves can also be eaten! I remember seeing somewhere when I was younger that the roots were used by some native cultures as well, but I can't find that now..
