Trina is by far one of my favourite characters ever, and I'm half asleep right now so forgive me if I don't make sense but the way I see her is that she is a woman who has relatively no self esteem or self worth. She has so little identity outside of her marriage with Marvin due to the expectations forced upon her as a Jewish middle-class American woman in the 70s and once that marriage crumbles of course she's gonna blame herself. She's been told her whole life that she's gotta do what everyone wants her to do, be the ideal woman who never is too loud or too harsh and does whatever her husband wants of her, and without that who is she? She has no friends. The neighbours see her as a joke. Her husband is off screwing some other guy (not even a woman– she's been replaced by a fairy) and her son doesn't respect her as such. She doesn't work and her parents don't care about her, as long she's creating the illusion of being happy they're satisfied. In MotF she had to come to terms with roughly twelve years worth of manipulation and emotional trauma and self-loathing and allow herself to be seen outside of what she is 'supposed' to be and her sexuality (think of Whizzer, see the parallels, right?) and even though in her new marriage she is already expecting for it to be another sham for her to be reduced to a sexual object that can't even fulfill its sexuality, she expects Mendel to cheat and lie and she embraces it. And over time in Falsettoland you can see her becoming more of herself and embracing her marriage, she may never be truly happy or free but she is happier than who she was then she was with Marvin. She is by far the most empathetic character in the whole trilogy because she has the ability to forgive and forge a friendship with the man who hurt her for twelve years. She has the ability to connect with the man her ex-husband left her for even though she still might blame him but she knows that she shared his life. He doesn't want him to die. She's insecure. Her biggest fantasy is being held and the man meaning it. She's suicidal and snarky and angry and fearful and hypersexual and lovely. She thinks flowers will fix everything. Great character. 10/10. I cry over her at least once a week
