i found ur blog on a prehistoric /fa/ tumblr thread (https://warosu.org/fa/thread/10781822#p10798115 if ur wondering) and it’s really not often you see an oldfag drainer, so i have to wonder how has being in the fandom been like? has your opinion of drain gang and sad boys heavily changed over the years/opinion on the current drain gang and sad boys? :p
Hahahah this is an absolutely insane thing to read what are the odds truly but I can’t pass up the chance to flex my 29 year old unc drain status it’s been a wild ride so here you go. I got grounded for a month around the time of me being on /fa/ because I drove 3 hours on my learners permit without telling my parents to go see yung lean’s first LA show ever & 2nd US show ever (openers - yung Sherman, James Ferraro, black kray, Chris travis. Bladee and ecco and Gud were there, no Thaiboy iirc.) was totally worth it. Have emails with Karman about buying the OG Rainworld hoodie and dms with Ecco about buying the Draingg tee and passed on both because I was in highschool and had no money. Still cringe reading that back. Met ecco after he premiered GTR at the Wiltern and had a 1 on 1 talk with him about music videos and future music. Without sounding like overly fanboyish it’s been a defining pillar of my personality. I downloaded Gluee off a mediafire link he posted on Twitter when it dropped and it permanently altered the course of my life, I truly felt like I had struck music gold and that someone understood me and how it felt to be emo and online and heard music that sounded so brand new that had never been made before and I still feel that today. My opinion on the boys has not really changed, I think they were and are the definite genre pushing artists of our generation and everything popping now and back to 2016 wouldn’t exist without them. New fans come and go, I saw it when they dropped the eversince fader article, when be nice 2 me dropped, covid, 2022 world tour, I honestly think people overstate that stuff trying to make it seem like theyre “one of the good fans” but at the same time seeing people do the weird parasocial meme stuff makes me kinda bummed. Also not being able to meet them after shows anymore sucks. When I met Ecco I literally just dmd him “hey I’d love to meet you after the show if that’s cool” and he replied where to come out and it was just me and him out there chatting and I don’t think that could ever happen again but it’s a worthy sacrifice for them to be recognized for being their genius. I love everything they’re still doing artistically, sonically, visually. Still pushing boundaries many are afraid to push and keeping it fresh to keep the newgens on their toes lol.
Anyways tl;dr it’s been a defining pillar of my life and in a direct and indirect way lead me to so many things - avenues of art, friendships, relationships, career moments, DIY spirit, questionable fashion choices, etc. I will always love and ride for underground boundary pushing music because of how I rememeber feeling when I first listened to UD2002 and Gluee in 2013 / 2014 and how I felt misunderstood in the world but the few out there that got it just *got it*, ykwim? Now I work in the music industry and I have friends at some of their management companies / labels. I wouldn’t trade any of it for the world :)
